yea, it looks off alright

It looks pretty good to me! I do agree about the penis but keep arting and don’t worry about it too much. It’s very good for a first upload. :)

Don’t I know that… Still, there’s little one can do to please the audience that’s in one’s own control. One could chase trends, or cater for attention-starved niches, or to those with very specific tastes. If one chooses to do that, they don’t need outside voices to make that decision.
 
One could switch media—a lot of people filter 3d art outright for various reasons, so there may be a visibility thing in making rather reserved NSFW 3d art—but once again this is a choice where outside opinions lack helpfulness.
 
One could strive for artistic growth, which may not please the audience in the short term, but will pay dividends for the rest of one’s life in all forms of art, and even support any future changes in genre, topic, or medium. Also this is the only area where I feel I am at all qualified to offer my opinion.

Well. Imo the piece is already much better than half of the beginner gmod/ sfm pieces out there, especially ones with just default pose and no control of the lighting.
 
I highly doubt the strange penis anatomy and the crayon eyes are the reason for its “low” upvote counts.
 
Ppl dont upvote for someone’s technical skills / fundamentals. Ppl upvote based on like / dislike. It’s an emotion thing.
 
But you’re not wrong on your assessment.

I can’t help but notice the odd morphology of the disembodied penis. The shaft seems to grow from between the ballsack halves at an abrupt angle.
 
The eye seems a bit messy, like it was drawn with crayon, and the main highlights contradict the soft light of the scene, but that’s already a much more minor detail.

Speaking of art, it looks pretty good, usually first 3D attempts are made with old “default sfm pony models” and tons of clipping.  
Is pretty softcore for my tastes though.  
Don’t let just a couple of first negative comments discourage you from improving.

my guess is the tags you use and also that your piece isn’t saying anything in particular. Is nice, dat about it.

What you could do, is to directly ask for a critique from someone you think is better than you.

This artwork looks okay but doesn’t really have any particular meaning, may not be provocative enough to get people’s attention. Lyra is more suited for human/pony interspecies stuff…
 
If you can, try recreating this picture but with Twilight instead, with an open book in front of her and why not her wearing glasses too. See if the score improves.

I rarely ever even get 30 upvotes regularly. 51 is pretty damn good.
 
Your thing is not really my thing so I can’t say much else.

Recently I’ve made my first artwork involving character. I posted it here ~10 hours ago, now my post has +40 score and one negative comment. I had checked a lot of 3D artists here (mainly for references) before I posted my art and it looks like +40 score is quite bad even for the first upload (at least for 3D).  
I’ve seen worse artworks (imo) getting much better score, but the problem is that nobody said what’s wrong with mine. I want to improve but I don’t even know where to start
