The official English Zelda.com makes a lot of very questionable statements though, like claiming there’s only one Link and that the Haunted Wasteland eventually became the Desert of Mystery.

So they’re not the best source for information about what’s canon or not.

Actually, apparently according to DYKGaming they recently confirmed in an official Japanese book, or something it is indeed Ganon’s official full name.

Remember when the US manual for A Link to the Past said that Ganondorf’s full name was Ganondorf Dragmire, and then this was never mentioned again in any future games (it’s not even in the Japanese manual for the game either, the translators just made it up)?

And this is all helping to prove my point of the “legend” part needing to be remembered when people look at the timeline and are so ridged with how things should fit or if they make no sense.
If this day and age misinformation can come about from people retelling the same thing over and over, when we have a means to find the truth easily, then a legend that is retold over who knows how long will have it on a larger scale.
So if we look at the stories of Legend of Zelda games as Legend of Zelda, we have a reson for the timeline to be correct and for errors and contradictions to be in place.

It didn’t help that DKVINE, and such spread that rumor like crazy. The truth was Miyamoto liked DKC, and even uncreditedly helped give advice on making the game. Like making DK’s sidekick a new character (Rare was going to use DK Jr. originally) was Miyamoto’s idea.
In fact, having their Texas developer Retro Studios revive the DKC series was also Miyamoto’s idea.

@Jarkes
Yeah, I think Larry Bundy’s “Times Miyamoto was a dick” video was highly inaccurate (and biased) as Miyamoto & Nintendo actually had a good relationship with Argnaut & Rare. Considering he still used outdated rumors like the “Miyamoto hates DKC” one, and such which were already debunked years ago, I question where he gets his information.
Not to mention his remark that “If you’re a British developer, never work with Nintendo” is very ironic, considering Rareware was much better off with Nintendo then they were with Microsoft. (Whom practically let Rare go out of business.)

There were also rumors that Nintendo/Miyamoto “forced” Rare to remake the N64 game “Dinosaur Planet” into “Star Fox Adventures,” (I remember a crazy Krystal-fangirl on DA always going off about that) but according to it’s developers, when they had to remake the game for GameCube, Miyamoto generously offered to let them use the Star Fox brand for it. The developers gladly acceptted as they loved the Star Fox games, and thought they could do more with the game by using Star Fox stuff.

And there’s also repeated talk about how Miyamoto screwed over the guys who made the original Star Fox, which may have SOME grain of truth to it, but even with that there was only really one guy who was outright bitter about it and he may have been a bit of an unreliable narrator in the interview where he talked about it. Everyone else on the old Star Fox team got along pretty great and even worked on later games in the series.

Oh and as an example, the often repeated “fact” that Shigeru Miyamoto hates Donkey Kong Country and had some problem the people at Rare that made it, because it was repeated but not accurately.
Ya, he got along great with the people are Rare working on it and likes the game, he only had a problem with how he was being pushed to make Yoshi’s Island in the same visual style.
That was what he hated, not the game or the people behind it.

I’ve taken the view of the stories of eatch entry to be a a result of them being like real legends, they have altered over retelling, so of course the official timeline will not make sense and be hard if you take them all at face value.
So they can easily fit as the timeline lays them out, all errors and contradictions are from the effect of that.
Think of the game telephone/Chinese whispers.

I personally decided to not regard the official timeline, or try making sense of it, as it’s hard. Same goes for Mario (all the spinoffs, RPGs, Ect.) and Sonic.

I remember the Castlevania creators stated they regretted releasing an official timeline for the CV series, as it lead to them writing themselves into corners, and limiting what they can do with the series story-wise.
It’s also a shame they disregarded “Castlevania Legends” for Gameboy too, and the retconned Sonia Belmont from existence.

Pretty much, yeah. Terminator’s the same way. All those Arnold Schwarzeneggers have to come from somewhere. (Or somewhen.)

@Prof.NightJack
I’m talking specifically about defeats that end in a Game Over. If you take those as canon, you’d also have to consider the timeline where Child Link gets plugged by a Skulltula before he’s even heard of the Master Sword. And it’s not that he wanted to abandon the future. It’s just that he’s messing with forces that no one entirely understands. Same thing happened in the Wind Waker timeline and no one complains about it.

Just one thing, the “hero defeated” mean he failed to save Hyrule.
If Link disappears before defeating Ganon then he fails, so he is essentially defeated in his quest.
If it sets wrong with you then he can’t fail for any reason.
Take you pick, defeated in battle or defeated by not showing up to help the land, what is worse?

On a side note, I never liked the official explanation for the classic timeline. The Hero of Time (or any Hero) being canonically defeated doesn’t sit right with me. Instead I like to think of it as an alternate Adult Timeline, where Link disappears before defeating Ganon, not after.

To explain: each time you go to the future, it’s to an alternate timeline based on your actions in the past. Say you pull out the Master Sword without planting any magic beans. Then the future you first visit, Timeline A, has no magic sprouts. Go back, plant five beans, go forward. Now you’re in Timeline B, with five sprouts. Go back again to plant the other five, and you end up in Timeline C, with all ten sprouts. There’s no way to go back to Timelines A or B, but they must still exist, since your actions in those futures still happened and you keep any items you got from them. Unfortunately, you didn’t defeat Ganon in those timelines, which means they’re hosed.

Crucially, you have to go back and forth at least once to complete the game. You get the Requiem of Spirit in the future, which you use in the past to get the Silver Gauntlets. So Link must abandon at least one future to its fate before beating Ganon.

I keep thinking Child.

Adult basically only consists of the Celda games while the Defeat timeline is filled with the classic games.

It’s a very flimsy rationale I know.

That’s a theory.

@Dustcan
It doesn’t take place in the Adult Era Timeline is the way that I’m seeing it. Because at the end of that game Hyrule is still stuck at the bottom of the Ocean and Ganondorf is a statue with the Mastersword still in him. And that’s following the Windwaker events.

There are only two other Timelines that make sense for Zelda BOTW.
The Child Era and the Failed Era Timeline are the only two that make the most sense.
