I suppose for people with large amounts of notifications it might have some benefit to them… for the majority of users though it probably simply looks more cluttered.
Having the added borders and labeling around the notifications just adds more bulk to what was already a pretty slim and straightforward design. While I don’t get many notifications myself, having the visual space of 4 or 5 of the old style notifications be what is needed for simply 2 I feel is more then necessary. I liked the simple number code knowing it was for images and forum title know it was for forums. But having that on top of a whole sectioned out table surrounding it is just visually more cluttered while also having the links to click those notifications be more spread out.
I prefer just middle clicking each notification to open them in new tabs to quickly go through them generally by order of time. With this new system, while I can still do that, it’s just more spread out while having other elements to skip over instead of just some quick clicks while moving my mouse down.
To me this little change seems more targeted at the mods or other users with more then just a few notifications a day to check through.

*grumble grumble* Β Wish I’d taken a screenshot of the old version, then…
No chance this could be another one of those toggleable options? Β : P
Like, this version sincerely offers me no benefit and I honestly think it looks ugly. Β : /

Ironically, this was the only notification I have to gauge the difference by, but I could immediately notice the difference.
Based on other posts I’m seeing, that means I can’t see the full expanse of the change, but if I can comment off of this glimpse, the change feels ugly and bulky, akin to the change that put the unnecessary chunky boxes around image descriptions and sources.
Granted, I’m also a user who doesn’t typically have that many notifications at a time (I don’t believe I’ve ever reached 10, or even much more than 5).
I can still remember how nice I thought the notifications list looked the first time I had multiple of them, and my opinion of that look still stands - effective, pretty, not overstated, and altogether nice to see whenever popping open the page. I’ve not been on all too many forums in my time, but it was very refreshing to see a UI that did the job without being overbearing with heavy category boxes like I was browsing a section of the forum itself.

Shimmering Smile - Celebrated the 10th anniversary of Equestria Girls!
Lunar Supporter - Helped forge New Lunar Republic's freedom in the face of the Solar Empire's oppressive tyrannical regime (April Fools 2023).
Roseluck - Had their OC in the 2023 Derpibooru Collab.
Flower Trio - Helped others get their OC into the 2023 Derpibooru Collab.

A Lovely Nightmare Night - Celebrated the 12th anniversary of MLP:FIM!
Princess of Love - Extra special version for those who participated in the Canterlot Wedding 10th anniversary event by contributing art.

I like the new setup, it has more visual elements on the page but still feels less cluttered because all that empty space is attenuated by everything being a little more condensed.

If you aren’t subbed to a lot of things it’s fine, but if you ARE subscribed to multiple images/threads then having to keep scroll down to a whole other categories is annoying.
Maybe have any notifications beyond a threshold (5? 10?) trigger a [read more] or [show all] type of condensing where it collapses that block down to just a few with the bottom one greyed out, and you have to click on a button or arrow or whatever on the divider to un-collapse the block?

I prefer the old system tbh.

Plus it was helpful to see the notifications come up in the order you got them, instead of having to keep switching between each category to see the most recent notifications

If you have a lot of notifications, you have to scroll quite a lot, several full screen heights, to reach the different categories or even just the first view all button. More than you had to scroll to read the full uncategorized list before. So I’d propose one or more of…
  • reduce the number of displayed notifications per category down from current 25
  • move the button to view all messages to the top of each category instead of the bottom
  • add some links at the top of the page to jump to a category or directly open the corresponding view all page

A new format for the notifications page has been deployed as a test.
Please post positive commentary, criticism, and/or hate comments here.

Default search

If you do not specify a field to search over, the search engine will search for posts with a body that is similar to the query's word stems. For example, posts containing the words winged humanization, wings, and spread wings would all be found by a search for wing, but sewing would not be.
