The thing that bugs me about an act of vandalism like this is it has all the political force of a mass shooter’s manifesto. That is, it doesn’t demonstrate anything more than one person’s admittedly strongly held opinion. Riots are destructive, sure, but they also demonstrate widespread discontent, of the sort that makes politicians stand up and take notice. This is just… one guy, whose vote can be cancelled out by a single Israeli immigrant.
It doesn’t even work as a terroristic threat, because, I mean, how many portraits of Lord Balfour are out there for him to fuck up? At least the climate people pick targets that aren’t obviously constrained by their symbolic value. (And there are no end of Confederate statues for the people who want to knock those down.)

For real.
Not to mention it was a painting honoring an asshole colonizer. All the western gentiles in Balfour’s time pushing for Zionism seldom had Jews’ best interests at heart, and it had more to do with getting the Jews out of their own countries.
I wonder how mad the people upset about Balfour’s portrait were when Confederate statues came down? My guess would be “very.”

Apparently it was a unanimous decision so I’d like to know more about it
Basically the court unanimously ruled that states can’t bar people from serving under 14a in federal office but they can do it in state office, only federal congress can do that
There’s also the implication, that the liberal justices disagreed with, that even if a federal court convicts trump, he can still run as it is only up to congress to decide whether someone can run or not under that statue

Who said anything about “free”? Of course it comes out of taxes, actually well managed taxes in an organized system focused on the welfare on the populace. Meanwhile the glorious US system is solely focused on profit, with massively overinflated prices for everything from bandaids to ER visits to lifesaving medication.

Please name one. Name a ‘leftist’ statue that you honestly believe would be taken down and melted as an act of government under a ‘rightist’ government. I don’t think you can.
American Republicans change the names of post offices and schools. They erect statues to their favorite insurrectionists.
They, as a civil unit, don’t take down statues. That’s not their thing.
They have other things they want to melt down instead.

Lee didn’t want statues about the war, since he wanted the nation to move on. The KKK funded them after his death to be a reminder to black people about our nation’s dark history. I’m all for the left giving bigot groups the middle finger.

Yeah there were totes Very Fine People on both sides. The Very Fine People on the left side wants to build statues of people who fought against slavery. The Very Fine People on the right side want to build statues of people who fought for slavery.
The Very Fine People on the left side get mad when statues of people who fought against slavery are brought down. The Very Fine People on the right side get mad when statues of people who fought for slavery are brought down.
It’s a both sides issue.

I’m all for better wages, I’m just pointing out that the issue might be the work itself and not the money.
@The Smiling Pony
If memory serves me right, Lee fought for his state, even if he wasn’t fond of its new government. He also hated the idea of getting a statue, since he wanted the nation’s wounds to heal and leave this disgraceful war behind them (hence why the statues were made long after his death by racists who wanted to remind black people they were once slaves in our history). This background has no idea what he’s talking about.

That’s how ratios work.
For a random dump of news, DeSantis is now moving to expand his “Don’t Say Gay” bill into all grades. Previously the bill only ranged from kindergarten to 3rd grade, now it’ll go up to 12th grade, basically meaning only college courses are exempt from the bill’s ban on talking about sexual orientations or gender identity. For now.
Because of course, it was never about “protecting kids”.
NSFW warning, I guess, because the top image is a picture of the world’s most famous naked statue.
Not directly related to DeSantis’ Don’t Say Gay, but definitely an adjacent issue on the growing hysteria over any sexual content, perceived or otherwise.
Biden’s been kinda back and forth on labor rights. He’ll give all the cheap platitudes for it, but when it comes to substantial union support that would actually inconvenience corporations he’s been pretty spotty. So yeah more of the same here.
All it took was for perpetual train derailments getting put in the national discourse for it to happen! Norfolk Southern still refuses to budge though.

well, that’s a relief at least. it’s been a while since then so i couldn’t quite remember. also, the tearing down of statues while not as violent, still didn’t help. 1 example coming to mind is the Colston statue in Bristol UK. i’m generally sceptical of any kind of news article i read (if i have the time) & rarely let their biases sink in until i see reason to believe them.
Paris riots are worse you say? & more than the US? that is interesting. France does have a history of that sort of thing dating back to the 13h century (i just looked that up).

There’s this new statue that is on a New York courthouse in homage to Ruth bader ginsberg and her fight for abortion. the video I linked to previously was from a YouTube channel called “little light studios” demonizing it literally and it’s not the only one doing so. I’m not going to be surprised when some crazy fundie tries to destroy it one day.

Something I’ve been thinking about for some time that’s been troubling me:
Ya’s remember the George Floyd uprising? These days it feels like it never even happened with how quickly support for police reform snapped back to overall opposition, and both parties regressed to 90s-style “tough on crime” rhetoric. Until about a week ago discussion or media stories about it and/or police brutality have been non-existent. I’m struggling to find much in the way of lasting material changes for the better that came from it.
Most reforms were killed off in Congress and state legislatures, and what few did get through are toothless and cops can easily ignore them by way of the Blue Wall of Silence. Meanwhile, Joe Biden has increased the flow of federal funds to law enforcement by an unprecedented amount, and “fund the police” is the strategy of most Democratic Parties on the state level.
More recently, mainstream media in the lead-up to the midterms breathlessly reported lurid headlines about a “crime wave” citing preexisting levels of violent crime, driving up public perception that violent crime is out of control and we need more cops. Local media continues to uncritically parrot every statement made by police about the people they kill as the Gospel truth. (A side note on that, the number of people killed by police year over year has steadily increased since 2020.)
Worst of all, it seems the most tangible changes have been in Republican states, where bills were introduced or even passed that give civil immunity to people who run protesters over, and that greatly broaden the criteria for declaring a protest a riot. On the federal level, the Department of Justice’s release on its campaign against domestic terror specifically defines any group opposed to capitalism as a domestic terror organization.
It just boggles my mind just how thoroughly the country forgot everything, especially that megathread First Amendment lawyer T. Greg Doucette made counting over 700 instances nationwide of unprovoked police violence against BLM protesters. And all we have to show for it are a few streets named after BLM and/or George Floyd, a few brand names changed, Mississippi’s new flag, and a few more Confederate statues dismantled.
I dunno, it just feels like Americans completely lost all interest in making a change as soon as Biden was in office and abandoned any reform once Senate Republicans said “no.” Like liberals all went “Oh well! We tried,” then stopped tuning in. With how muted the response to Keenan Anderson’s murder was, it feels like any chance of real change is outside my lifetime. REALLY hope I’m wrong on that.
Hopefully the broader coverage of Tyre Nichols’ murder tips the needle again, and in a more permanent way. Not sure if I should hold my breath yet.

The antiquities were returned during a repatriation ceremony at the Pakistan Consulate that was attended by Ayesha Ali, Consul General of Pakistan in New York, and US Homeland Security Investigations Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Thomas Acocella.
The art pieces and artefacts included a Gandharan statue depicting a Maitreya — an enlightened form of the Buddha — which was looted from Pakistan and smuggled into New York during the 1990s.
Some good news that’s not related to Ukraine or the American election.

You are being overdramatic, and more importantly unnecessarily so. Even if you believe that the current ruling party in Italy is fascist, they still are unlikely to do anything like that, there is no reason to do it except to “own the libs” and the political climate in Europe is very different.
I would be willing to bet real money on no new Mussolini statues in Italy in the reasonable timeframe (say two years).

Seeing Truss get utterly destroyed in the polls after only a few weeks gives me hope Meloni in Italy gets a similar treatment once her fascist agenda becomes more pronounced. Not very optimistic about that, though.
Speaking of Italy, any guesses on when the first post-WWII statue or memorial of Mussolini will be unveiled? Hopefully it’s vandalized or trashed just as quickly.
