Close to home: My Little Pony Gen5
Gen4 had some liberal ideas (see all the lesbian shipping and eventual LyraBon marriage), which is fine. The entire setting wasn’t an excuse to include them, and they were very well integrated. I say this as someone who even likes the school of friendship and the student six, they did that in a great way.
Gen5 decided we need an allegory for extreme racism and the flaws of ethnostates, and in order to shove it into the setting, the movie writers decided to destroy Equestria and make the setting post-apocalyptic though also lighthearted to keep with the MLP setting. If it weren’t for a desire to make political issues the #1 focus for MLP:ANG to the exclusion of keeping to the bones of the setting, we could have had Luster Dawn as the protagonist with her diverse friend-group. Hell, if they were less focused on making the allegory the focus of the setting, we could have used an already extremely racist society in the show to make it work! Maybe Chrysalis makes a new hive and it’s changeling supremacist. Maybe go for a slavery allegory with the Storm Kingdom’s likely war-crime laiden setting. Who knows.
And again, I say this as someone who was happy to see LyraBon’s marriage, the school of friendship, the works. It can be done well, and it can be done poorly. It was done poorly. And it was done poorly because they really wanted to work the politics into the fiber of the setting, instead of letting it enter it naturally.
