“The report from the IPPR and Common Wealth thinktanks found that business profits rose by 30% among UK-listed firms, driven by just 11% of firms that made super-profits”
http://www.hl.co.uk/tools/calculators/inflation-calculator
Calculate the value of £1000 from january 2020. It’s £1,337. 33%.
It’s an old article, so it’s a little lower, but most of that inflation was earlier on, in the 2020-2021 period. The point remains. A vast majority of the profit increase perfectly tracks inflation.

Yes that’s what I said. The initial surge of prices was because corporations used the threat of inflation to jack up prices massively outpacing inflation, then it stabilized (largely around the time of the IRA).

A lot has been said about Trump’s mass deportation plans targeting blue states but since those states are unlikely to cooperate on those plans (and thus make ICE’s job difficult) I’ll bet a lot of the attention and resources will instead go to red states, specifically Georgia, Texas and Florida. Georgia in particular could be a political sore spot for Trump since it’s no longer a solid red state anymore (and the Atlanta area was one of the few places that moved left from 2020, so mass deportation will likely not be received well there).

I think the biggest issue with Trump voters is that they likely don’t read the news a lot or watch TV so they never got the campaign ads from the Harris campaign warning about Project 2025 and the tariffs.
Wouldn’t surprise me if 2028 is the first post-TV election.

Or maybe these people just type “Project 2025” into the search bar again and again because they already knew about it and are looking for updates?

I think there’s a lot of factors that went into the outcome of the recent election, but I’d agree that this is definitely one of the bigger ones. People in general don’t really get their news from these kind of sources anymore. It doesn’t really matter what kind of campaign Harris runs if hardly anyone sees it.
And we have to acknowledge that on the other side of that the Republicans have a vast propaganda network they can and do use to spread their lies 24/7. Even if you spend a billion dollars on ad buys, you’re not going to be able to compete with that kind of coverage.

Updates on what? The next bunch of rights they’re going to lose under the orange autocrat?

With the dust now settled, the question arises as to who MAGA supporters will select as their candidate for the 2028 elections, assuming Trump does adhere to constitutional term limits and steps down.
Will the MAGA movement die out when Trump no longer holds office, or will they demand a third term, citing the disputed results of the 2020 election as justification?
My gut is telling me that they will demand a third term in office from Trump, otherwise they might view him as a traitor to the country because of a “stolen election” from 2020. They might choose J.D. Vance?

And in Eastern Europe even mentioning immigrants positively would get you hate mail.
From what I can discern, it depends on the immigrant.
East Asians like Vietnamese are generally viewed positively as honest, hard working, reliable.
Hispanic, Native Americans, Pacific islanders, etc. usually positive/neutral, sometimes confused with Spaniards/Portuguese/Italians or with people from Middle East.
Black people can be viewed negatively by some because of horrible misconceptions like “Africans live in mud huts and are poor because they are lazy” and because of more malign racism imported from US.
(Roma and Sinti are viewed negatively as “thieves” and “beggars”, but they are locals, not immigrants.)
Arabs and Muslims are usually viewed very negatively, as welfare collectors or terrorists.
@Dark Vessel
Inflation always hits workers the most, because wages lag behind.
@SleepySteve
To give you all some hope: Trump doesn’t have to deport anyone. He can even relax the border protection and his voters will still be praising him for “stopping illegal immigration”. Just like the wall, he does not need to fulfill his promises. Giving “strong and smart” vibes to his voters is enough to convince them.

One thing I’m taking away from this, aside from campaigns literally don’t matter, is that Tim Walz should run for president. He seemed to be the most likable person this cycle, but most people didn’t know much about him this time due to being a VP candidate.

I feel like him running for the next election would be a good choice, but as TSP mentioned a while ago despite being nice guy with good policies, his reputation is probably tainted from being part of Kamala’s failed election campaign and he might be seen as a risk

I’d rather have someone who’s a fresh face. One who actually has a clear vision of what the US should be and not cumbered by the past (i.e. no more talk of the “liberal world order”, Cold War liberalism, neoliberal/neoconservative ideology, etc.). Someone who understands the present time and will take the US to a new direction. That was basically who Obama was (until he actually started governing).
The problem is there’s not a single politician anywhere in the democratic world who has that vision, at the moment.

Should we talk about the propositions and how it did on certain states? Since I live in California, here’s how the propositions did in my state and my analysis or reactions them:
YES on prop. 2: Authorizes bonds for school facilities.
Good. I’m glad it was passed so that schools in the state can be improved.
YES on prop. 3: Repeals same-sex marriage ban.
Also good. This was a no-brainer.
YES on prop. 4: Authorizes bonds for water, wildfire and land protection measures.
Triple good, though I’m hoping the organization that receives the money do not put stuff them into their pockets.
NO on prop. 5: Lowers vote needed to approve bonds for housing and infrastructure.
I voted “yes” on it since the progressive voter guide told me to, but apparently, people didn’t want to lower the vote needed to approve bonds for affordable housing and public infrastructure projects from a two-thirds majority to 55%.
Leaning towards NO on prop. 6: Prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude as a punishment for crime.
WTF, California voters, I’m disappointed. I voted “yes” on it since I hate slavery of any kind. But it looks like the majority of the voters wanted to be tough on crime.
Leaning towards NO on prop. 32: Raise California’s minimum wage to $18 an hour effective in 2025 for employers of more than 25 people and effective in 2026 for others.
Raising the minimum wage seems like a no-brainer, but in some cities in CA, the minimum wage is already higher than that. So I guess the voters in those states voted “no.”
NO on prop. 33: Repeals the 1995 law banning rent controls, allowing local governments to expand limits on rental rates for housing.
61% of the voters said “no” because rent control doesn’t work and because rent control-related props keep on popping up on every ballot for the past decade or so (probably an exaggeration).
Leaning towards YES on prop. 34: Set new rules limiting how certain healthcare entities can spend money earned from a federal discount drug program.
I don’t really have much opinions about this prop. It was targeting the controversial AIDS Healthcare Foundation, so yay I guess if the prop passes.
YES on prop. 35: Permanent existing tax on managed health care insurance plans that provides funding for the state’s Medi-Cal health care program.
Again, I don’t really have much opinion about this prop. 67% of the voters said “yes” on it.
YES on prop. 36: Increase penalties for repeated theft offenses and certain drug crimes, including some involving fentanyl.
Considering how many properties have broken or robbed in California for the past several years, I’m not surprised that this prop passed. Nearly 70% of the voters said “yes” on it. I voted “yes” on the prop as well since I got tired of seeing videos of stores being broken into by flash mobs in major cities in CA.

It’s because he and his campaign/transition team has consistently failed to meet the deadlines to provide a code of ethics as to how they’ll handle potential conflicts of interest.
You have to have ethics to provide a code of them.

California is progressive until it’s not. Especially since it swung heavily towards Trump this year despite losing it easily (not as heavy as New York, though). Something tells me it’s gonna keep going that rightward route.
Of note, LA County’s progressive DA lost re-election to a Bush administration lawyer by a landslide. All he needed to do was get rid of the R by his name, proving conservatives can win in Los Angeles as long as they’re not Republican.

That’s easily explained. Despite California being “progressive” it’s also extraordinarily NIMBY.
By the end of the decade California will go from the 5th largest economy in the world (not country. World) to in the top 3, but there’ll be state sanctioned roving murder gangs hunting the homeless in order to keep property values high.
And yes Ana Kasparian will not only be a member, but also their Employee of the Month every month.
