Beyond that, since you brought up search traffic, is it just that you want Google to see both the words “aurelleah” and “aurry” on pages?
Nope. Honestly I’m not feeling particularly energetic about debating my reasons why I want them separate. I wouldn’t be here requesting that they stop getting merged together, if the reasons werent important to me. I’ve expressed my wishes, and mods have previously been excellent on the topic, in terms of accepting that my reasons are valid and respecting those wishes.
You dont have to understand those reasons or agree with them for them to be worth factoring when mods decide whether to un-merge the names.
There is also precedent for tag implications on OCs as you mentioned. That’s an option I’d find agreeable if it’s that much of a problem for having 2 names on an OC.

Little reasons. None of them are super important, like you said, affecting only a tiny proportion of images on the site, but they are reasons. I’ll put it at the end of the post because it’s kind of a rant.
Anyway, my own ranting aside, I looked and I did see two other cases where OCs have two different named oc: tags that imply each other, so there is in fact a precedent of having that setup for OCs.

On the site, in general, the goal is to have one tag only for a specific thing. Otherwise, content gets split up in a way that people can’t identify it all. (Of course, there are lots of examples where there are multiple tags meaning the exact same thing, because of human fallibility and limited time to find them all.)
In the cases where there are multiple character tags that imply each other, it’s because it was a character with no official name (at least for a while) and multiple names of equal popularity arose among fans, so it was set up that way to not give preference to one or the other. (Also happens when a character gets a less-popular official name after a fan name was in use for a long time.) Obviously, an OC’s name is decided by the creator, so this situation is irrelevant.
Having extra tags takes up more space in the tag list on posts.
People who aren’t familiar with the character might look in the tags and be confused why there are two OCs tagged in a picture with only one character, or might see a picture with two characters (where one doesn’t have a name or isn’t tagged), see that there are two OC tags, and mistake those tags to mean two different characters.
The site has a feature where you can search by number of tags of a type on an image - so having multiple tags for the same OC will mean those pictures come up with more “characters” than there really are.
Moreover, I still don’t really understand how having two tags on every image of the character achieves what you want: since you said you want to distinguish “Aurry the pone” from “Aurry the musician/artist”, this seems to me either that 1) you sometimes draw Aurry as a character and sometimes you draw Aurry as a self stand-in, in which case, there WOULD be cases when you’d tag oc:aurry and NOT oc:aurelleah (ie. they should not both be tagged most of the time), or 2) otherwise, that’s just what artist:aurelleah means vs. oc:aurelleah…simple.
Beyond that, since you brought up search traffic, is it just that you want Google to see both the words “aurelleah” and “aurry” on pages?

Why’s it an issue for an OC to have two names tho? Only affects 77 of the 2.2million+ safe-tagged images on the site, and improves the user experience of an active content creator that’s contributing horse stuff for people to enjoy c:

Having multiple tags for the same thing runs contrary to the whole idea of the site. Aliases allow for easy shorthands for the same tag; for example, “fs” is aliased to fluttershy. It would be pretty weird for every image of Fluttershy to also have “fs” as a separate tag. Most OCs don’t even get shorthand aliases, so you’re lucky here.

Implication would work, and would be actually handy to have yeah. part of the reason is that, while she’s indeed a sona for me, I refer to her as Aurry to distinguish Aurry the pone from aurry the musician+artist.
That, and Aurelleah is notoriously difficult for people to spell (as per youtube search traffic analytics for my work lmao)
Originally Aurelia Freefeather was supposed to be her name but idk it just didnt really stick. Having Aurry and Aurelleah imply eachother would work

There have been at least three different people who have independently noticed the duplicate tags and suggested they be consolidated into one. What purpose do you have for wanting multiple tags that have identical meanings?
Well, they should at least imply each other, then (like vinyl scratch and dj pon-3 imply each other) so that the tags are always present at the same time.
Or, is there ever a case where an image should have only one of them and not the other?

Default search

If you do not specify a field to search over, the search engine will search for posts with a body that is similar to the query's word stems. For example, posts containing the words winged humanization, wings, and spread wings would all be found by a search for wing, but sewing would not be.
