Well there was been at least 5 generations since g4 (according to elder flower), and if the ponies has similar livespends to humans, then it would’ve been 100 plus years at most since the very end of g4, so smart phones and other modern tech (even hoofprint security), would have enough time to advance, considering that the touchscreen have just been invented a couple decades ago in our own world.

Is magic even necessary when phones are a thing for everypony now? The weirder thing is they instantly invented the smartphone.

I don’t think the earth ponies had phones in the movie, could be wrong. I think it was only zephyr heights that had phones. It wasn’t until the re-integration that phones spread to Maretime and Bridlewood. (A little too quickly to be realistic imo.)

for the Pegasus, they didn’t need any defense cause they’re really high on a plateau

This makes sense considering the unicorns had magic so they didn’t see the need to be technological, but then when the magic disappeared and the tribes hated each other they didn’t get any knowledge of technology.

So when the magic disappeared, the Earth Ponies evolved their technology for self-defense while the Pegasus evolved for entertainment.

seems that zephyr heights and maretime bay are the only cities that that modern tech, for Bridlewood not so much, even that they don’t have any radio towers for phones to sent/receive signals with.
