It isn’t anything more than a headcanon. If he did something like that, I suppose that would be to emphasize how he became something that… just isn’t quite equine, not like your average pony, how he became something more (if you asked him; others would rightfully see him as a monster).

If anything the S9 premiere and his “New and Improved” personality gave even further justification behind my headcanon that he used some kind of bypass/shortcut that let him cast alicorn magic without being one, at the cost of frying more and more brain cells each time he used it, essentially the equivalent of D&D’s permanent Wisdom loss upon casting Corrupt spells. This is what led to the outcome of a castle filled with intricate magical traps laid by someone that barely is able to form a coherent sentence.
 
Then he was brought back by Grogar, which wiped away the brain damage/wisdom loss but none of his lust for power.

I always liked the idea that Sombra was the result of someone using Alicorn magic without being worthy of it.
 
Then again, my personal crazy headcanon is that all ponies are alicorns, they’ve just got some kind of species wide hereditory limiter embedded into them that can only be broken via being “worthy” (hence why the force that turned Twilight into an alicorn came from within).
 
That’s why Flurry was born an alicorn, she didn’t inherit the limiter from both of her parents.
 
I also always thought Starswirl and Sombra were childhood friends, and that his horn and Starswirl’s beard were the result of pranks they each played on the other, that they never bothered to dispel for sentimental reasons.

It’s pretty clear that they had “Plans” since season 3 involving Dark/Alicorn magic, I wonder if it’s related to the whole Cosmos thing they dropped

So that could also be why Sunset turned into a demon when she tried to use the Element of Magic without being “worthy.”

I have this really stupid headcanon that the demon–a denizen of Tartarus who sought to dominate or destroy Equestria–is Sunset’s true form and that the Elements, along with warping her mind, suppressed it.

I tend to think dark magic and alicorn magic aren’t quite the same thing, since Nightmare Moon is seemingly the result of Luna being supercharged with dark magic, if you’re not going with an outside entity influencing her existence.
 
“Alicorn magic” being for the worthy, or it can seriously go wrong (or rather, you can go wrong) is a sort of thing I can accept.

A lot of gifts, talents and even disabilities are passed on in our genes - why not magic? And Flurry didn’t ask to born with ultimate power (although to be fair, she probably would have if it was offered).

Alicorn magic is just the magic all ponies possess, in massive quantities. Of course, that can include dark powers as well.

I don’t hate Flurry Heart for being an alicorn simply because she has alicorn DNA. What I hate is how the show acts as though it can’t just be the fact that she has alicorn DNA. It has to be that she’s this super special baby because of reasons.
 
On top of that, A Flurry of Emotions showed that she has waaaay too much understanding of her own magic to not understand the difference between right and wrong.

I figured it was easy to explain that her mother was an alicorn, so it makes sense that she could be one too. But then the episode acts like it was this weird unexplainable phenomenon that no one has ever experienced, which sounded like a set up to something bigger.
 
This was dropped completely after her debut episode and since then no one seems to want to bring it up again.

What I want to know is why she doesn’t seem to be a crystal pony - but I suppose her mother’s alicorn status might explain that, too.@Spinny

I love these. This would literally explain everything. I love the idea that alicorn magic is inherently evil and it takes self-control and discipline to use it for good. It’d explain why Celestia rarely uses it, why Luna never uses it, why the Alicorn Amulet is an evil artifact, why Celestia fears becoming evil… :D

It also brings back into the question whenever alicorns truly are the combination of all three species as opposed to, say, an unholy aberration that shouldn’t exist.

One line from “Between Dark and Dawn” makes this an interesting discussion. Celestia mentions them not using their wings for the duration of their vacation, which could be read as meaning they were unicorns before becoming alicorns. This makes sense in canon, if they were a pair of unicorns whose special talents were raising the sun and moon, it’s not much of a stretch to imagine Starswirl giving them more power so they could do that indefinitely. Thus, by being able to move the sun and moon on their own, they were chosen to be both alicorns and the rulers of Equestria.

I do like that idea. I also like the idea of their once being lots of alicorns, but they were jerks who abused their power, and Celestia and Luna defected from their ranks. Subsequently, Celestia is now the only individual still in existence who knows how to make someone an alicorn, and bestows that gift on those she deems worthy.
