If anything the S9 premiere and his “New and Improved” personality gave even further justification behind my headcanon that he used some kind of bypass/shortcut that let him cast alicorn magic without being one, at the cost of frying more and more brain cells each time he used it, essentially the equivalent of D&D’s permanent Wisdom loss upon casting Corrupt spells. This is what led to the outcome of a castle filled with intricate magical traps laid by someone that barely is able to form a coherent sentence.
Then he was brought back by Grogar, which wiped away the brain damage/wisdom loss but none of his lust for power.
