IDW Thread (Spoilers)

Well this new comic is nice so far. Actually seems like it’d fit in an episode. The cute art style helps a lot too.

Agree, honestly between this and the RD/Trixie micro I think Trixie is really shaping up in the comics to being a great secondary character. Her hamminess makes for great comedy and her along road for redemption makes her relatable and far more believable for arc writing then some other redemption arcs.

i am still puzzle why the IDW writers avoid doing a TrixieXTwilight story like a plague…  
They are doing a FluttershyXIron Will one, something i expected the cartoon to do.

the most common theory is that a TrixieXTwilight plot (one where they are doing something together and are not enemies) is something the show writers want to do and specifically told the IDW to avoid it.

Maybe hopefully. Also that a comic with both in it would probably deal with a lot of magic stuff the show hasn’t explained properly (like if there’s a mana limit and such), and they don’t want to make something up and end up wrong.

ah man, i really wanted iron will to return in the show…

Fluttershy being paired with larger than life obnoxious characters is already way overdone.

I think the Iron Will pair up is about par for the course. It won’t hurt anyone nor canon really, plus it will put Flutters new found respect for finding balance in her element to the test, with an old advisory who while not being evil was at odds with her kindness and natural state of being. The simple fact that he successfully guided her toward a very dark place within herself without bs mind control might I add is rather fascinating in of itself and worth exploring with her flipping the tables on him.

If your talking about her having another Discord pair up comic I don’t see why its surprising. At the moment, she is the only pony who has any real relationship with Discord outside of resentment, mistrust and full on disgust like the rest of the Mane 6 (Twi’s whole were friends bit at the end of S4 will need some canon eps before its really a thing and the rest of the girls haven’t really accepted him) and Celestia. So for him to interact outside of her and the CMC since that micro comic went really well they don’t have a lot of options that won’t possibly step on the toes of the show writers with him since all of these comics are within the S4 time frame.

I don’t think Discord can be in the show enough to fully develop his relationship with everyone, it would take too much time. He’s likely going to revolve around Fluttershy from now on.
 
Meanwhile in the comics, there’s a pattern of ‘Fluttershy likes animals, so Discord does magic blah blah… animals!’ I want to see Discord have a special moment with other ponies instead of just being a plot ticket.

@Alumni Well, Pinkie did try, but Discord doesn’t seem quite as fond of her as he used to be. Kinda treated her like she was radioactive in Three’s A Crowd there when she offered to take care of him.

This sooooooo much. I will say Pinkies reaction to Discord is mixed so there is a possibility of the comic working with her since Pinkies attitudes with different ponies and peoples flip flop all the time.

Ok the idea that Discord used his power to give Fluttershy something nice or the CMC something fun is somehow a bad thing seems rather short sighted in my opinion. Both comics were trying to establish that Discord while having to keep his powers in check with the Mane 5 watch dogs that he still has a purpose and that he is slow learning what the meaning of friendship really means (unlike the wham bam thank you ma’ma we got at the end of S4 with that part of his arc).
 
Add to that, until the show gives Discord eps with the other Mane 6 issue with him being cased as water under the bridge, Discord is kind of muzzled right now in the comics. The comic CAN’t give him deep plots since it might go against canon related stuff that the staff have cue up for S5.
 
While the controversial mirror arc went into Cel and Luna history we have the Sister Journal as well as other history that had been in S4 revealed so something like that is not a huge deal since most of the important like Cel relationship with SS can simply be sad to have become unpleasant over the years after Luna as banished and no need for mention of the mirrors arc implications as to why,. Discord on the other hoof sadly can’t get away with such things yet.
 
Due to the fact that we know NOTHING about him outside of what we learned in RoH there is little to work with outside of the trickster gimmick and what we have seen in his arc of learning the meaning of friendship. So with little to work with the comic writers simply can’t give back history since it will either spoil eps or completely not gel with the info in the show and with the comics have so far been pretty good with keeping to show canon would defeat the purpose of giving him more depth since it would mean nothing in the overall canon of MLP.

Has Rarity done anything in this arc? And no I’m not asking for the reason you assume PonyPon. I am wondering because he has not seemed to have done anything so far.
 
I hope they incorporate her gem knowledge from the CMC micro in some way.

At the moment AJ seems to be taking the lead so no, but since we have another comic to go, I would be surprise if they didn’t have her doing something major with such a talent. The other well placed possibility is she will whip up some costumes that will help in the capture of the gem thief.

have Fluttershy or the CMC done anything? Or is basically everyone tagging along for the ride and Aj just kinda makes snarky comments?

More or less its mostly Trixie being awesome then the gem napping happens and all the girls tag along with Trixie / cops for a bit, then dun dun the cops accuse Trixie of being the gem napper and all the girls make a run for it with AJ taking the lead as to how to deal with stuff.
 
FS and CMC make cute remarks and is rather balanced until the end where AJ becomes the leaderish pony of the group and they decide to catch the gem bandit since they know where the next hist will be.
 
AJ snark is kept in check and for the most part everyone isn’t an ass to Trixie and they make it a point to say she doesn’t really deserve the hell she has been put through by the cops…so that’s a thing. Personally this fits in well with Trixie’s redemption arc that the comic seem to be working with since NMR scene and her interaction with RD ffe micro.
