I’m gonna derail the current discussion, because I found something pretty neat.
 
This was one of Winchester’s contributions to the late-war US in 1944-1945.  
Lady and gentlemen, I present to to you, the platypus of weaponry, the Winchester Automatic Rifle, AKA the WAR.

My dad has the direct kind of AR. From what I can tell, they’re more or less identical. If I’d just been shooting today maybe I’d remember something, but atm, I don’t remember any differences other than mine sounds a little sharper? But that’s probably because his is a .223 and mine’s a 5.56.

Historical firearms fascinate me.

Do some branch of the US military still use the 1911 pistol?

I’m sure a few soldiers do, probably special forces though.

The US Marine Corps. special operations have re-adopted the M1911 as the M45A1 or the “Close Quarters Battle Pistol.” It’s basically a modernized M1911 with a Picatinny rails system .

I hear the Force Recon uses a modified version.

The 1911 was replaced by the Beretta M9 as the main military sidearm. But just recently this year, that got replaced by the SIG P320, designated as the XM17, as the main sidearm.

Is it because of the ruggedness, sleekness, and stopping power of the 1911 that still makes it a ideal weapon for clandestine military operations?

It is a very rugged and simple/easy to maintain design, and if you look at an M1911 in person it’s actually quite slim and concealable compared to other modern pistols. Not to get into the age-old debate on stopping power between 9mm and .45, but the general consensus is that .45 will stop an opponent at any range, whereas 9mm may not be nearly as effective at close range.
 
Also, the .45 ACP round is naturally subsonic and works perfectly with suppressors, but to my knowledge none of the MEU(SOC) pistols have threaded barrels for mounting a suppressor.

My father owns a silver-plated M1911 and I have a black one with underbarrel rails to mount lights and lasers. It also has glow sights and a barrel extension to mount a suppressor. It was a gift for my 20th birthday.

As someone old enough to appreciate it, yeah I think it’s an awesome coating job.
 
Still, painting a real gun to look like a toy gun strikes me as a really bad idea.

At least it’s a personalized custom and not a production model.  
Besides, it’s art.

I agree, and I can appreciate the craftsmanship.
 
Still, there’s just something about making a real, functioning firearm look like toy firearm that doesn’t sit well with me - it just seems like a disaster/tragedy waiting to happen. So I’d hope those that do have their pistols done up like that store and use them in a responsible manner.

Yeah, apparently that colt I posted is supposed to be a machine pistol, pretty crazy huh? What’s even crazier is that this gun was apparently among the Dillinger gang’s arsenal

One of the most popular weapons among the gangs during the Gangster Era is the M1903 Pocket Hammerless pistol.  

 
It was highly concealable. Affordable. And easy to use.  
Al Capone probably carried one in his pocket all the time. Dillinger was found with one in his hand when FBI killed him. Bonnie smuggled one into prison when she broke Clyde out.  
And the pistol was also popular with military officers. General Patton carried one in fact.  

 
 
Despite its name. The gun had a hammer. It’s just concealed underneath the slide.

Also, every time I see the Artillery Luger I can’t help but think of this scene.

Looks like they took a foregrip from a Thompson 1928. Those diamond markings on the grip identifies this as an M1911A1.

Laws were lax in America back in those days. A chunk of weapons used by the US during WW1, ended up in criminal and civilian possession. Didn’t America used to have a tradition of service men being allowed to take weapons home?  
But it wasn’t necessarily dangerous according to some accounts from people who lived during that time.

Colt actually brought these back into limited reproduction a few years ago - pretty cool, huh?
 
A more recent Colt limited reproduction recently shown at the 2017 SHOTShow was a reproduction of the Vietnam-era M16A1. It’s semi-auto only, of course.  
This one just seems a tad silly to me because the MSRP is $2,500, but you could more or less build one just like it for less than half that much.
