You know, it has just occurred to me that today (or yesterday, depending on your time zone) is the 50th anniversary of Richard Nixon resigning from office as president of the United States.

Anyone care to share any thoughts on the subject of Watergate and Nixon’s resignation, and/or how relevant it is for today’s politics?

Just some random unconnected thoughts right now.

Nixon’s Southern Strategy is why racism is still a viable election strategy instead of fading away due to changing norms.

If Nixon didn’t resign we probably would have free healthcare.

If Ford had let the courts prosecute Nixon instead of pardoning him then Trump would have never run for office.

Fox News only exists because Roger Ailes didn’t want another Republican president to face impeachment like Nixon did.

If Nixon had learned from the failures of Project Independence then we would’ve had widespread green energy by now.

Honestly Nixon might’ve been the last Republican president we could say was “complicated” instead of “Literally just evil”. Maybe excepting the 2 Bushes, and with Jr it’s only because he might’ve been too dumb to be called intentionally evil.

It’s often forgotten but Dubya started the Aids relief program for Africa that saved an estimated 25 million lives.

Reagan became president by committing treason, is why Trickle Down Economics is a thing, and directly lead to the AIDs epidemic because he hated gays and thought only they could catch it.

He very much falls in the “Literally Just Evil” category.

So basically, from what I understand, Nixon was “supposed to be the chosen one” or something, either that or he was evil all along, then his men tried to illegally undermine the Democrats out of loss aversion(?) (what even happened during Watergate, anyway?) and Nixon was forced to resign. Then Reagan won, said “power overwhelming”, destroyed the Soviet Union, and made “Evil Only Has to Win Once” truth in television. And now we as a civilization are “down the hole without the mushroom”, among other King’s Quest metaphors. At least, that’s how I’m interpreting the current situation we’re in…

Uh, no. Nixon did have plans that could have improved the nation, but he was a paranoid bastard who couldn’t stub his toe without shouting to everyone in the room how they were all out to get him. This paranoia sabotaged all his ideas, most famously with him instigating the Watergate Scandal - despite the fact that he was set to win reelection in a landslide even without getting some major dirt on McGovern.

Nixon is by far the most interesting president to me. He was a man of genuine talent, and could potentially have become one of the greatest and most beloved of all presidents, but was brought to ruin by his own paranoia and moral failings. It’s like something out of a Greek tragedy.

POLITICO began receiving emails detailing Trump’s operation from an anonymous person named “Robert”. Among the files received is a research dossier on JD Vance done prior to Trump naming him his running mate.

I cannot wait for the “But his emails” cycle.

The turnaround with this election in the span of weeks needs to be studied
