It’s not even a retcon. It’s ALWAYS been stage magic. Very good stage magic that LOOKS flashy and impressive, but stage magic nonetheless.
 
Starlight’s line about “real” magic was just poor wording (either that, or her being unintentionally dismissive of stage magic as not being “real”).

The whole point of Trixie’s first appearance was that she very much WASN’T very powerful, except in regards to making things look very flashy and bombastic.
 
I swear, I will never understand why people act like it was a “retcon” and she was this awesome, super-powerful archmage before.

Insulting Rarity and Pinkie Pie’s career was probably the tipping point  
It was supposed to be awful; it’s a show for kids, they couldn’t just have her say “Fuck off, you stupid bitches!” to show-not-tell how far she’d overdone the “assertiveness” thing.

I like his portrayal in Once Upon a Zepplin way more  
Him shouting “NO REFUNDS!” and literally jumping over the side of the ship with a golden parachute was one of the funniest dadgum moments in the entire series, my wife and I both completely lost it and had to pause the episode to weep with laughter.

Now it become a meme at this point, it was ok maybe the first two times. Not so much the next 40 times  
And, like pretty much every other “funny” “sexy” meme, it is painfully obvious that 90% of the dudes who get all giddy over it have never actually seen a breast in person since they were a baby.
 
The popularity of screencaps with sexy text edited on top is one of the saddest and most pathetic things on this site.

I liked how chill they were in PArental Glideance  
That episode really splashed the whole Wonderbolts-as-jerkbags concept, which was already going down in flames after how patient they were with RD’s meltdown in Newbie Dash; all of their apparent jerkbaggery in earlier episodes has reasonable explanations for how it might have seemed a lot worse than it was, but the forbearance they showed with Windy and Bow– and how quickly they jumped at the opportunity to do something nice for them– was behavior that showed a conscious effort to be decent in a stuation where actual jerkbags would have ruined everything.
 
As I said that whole scene is one of my favourites in the entire show  
It really was surprisingly moving, wasn’t it? You could really feel how everyone involved had realized they’d done awful things without thinking about the consequences, and were genuinely remorseful when they understood how much they’d hurt the people around them.

What if Trixie actually didn’t name herself, and it was given to her by someone she loves and respect?  
I think she got the name “Lulamoon” from 4chan, so probably not.

No, it’s a retcon; S1 Trixie is clearly shown performing object teleportation or conjuration, manipulating the weather, and transmutating matter. Not to a great degree, but doing so nontheless.
 
I don’t dwell on it, but it’s a retcon.

I wonder what “Lulamoon” means anyway. Also when the hell when they use her full name in the show?

No, Lulamoon originally came from the toys, where Trixie was initially just labeled as “Lulamoon” in the blind bags. Fans latched on to this claiming it was her last name, and eventually later toys started calling her “Trixie Lulamoon”.

Okay, I’ll give you the object thing (though perhaps her troubles with it in seasons 6 & 7 were just her being WAY out of practice despite it being pretty basic apparently), and MAYBE the weather thing (that’s a little harder to justify I’ll admit), but the whole “make Rarity’s hair green and filthy” could have just been another illusion. That, or the illusion was simply making it green and she just threw a bunch of trash on it while the smoke was around.
 
Either way, being able to transform an object into an entirely different object was definitely new for her.

I still think that, even though connecting the recent seasons to the older ones is still fiddly, the show’s continuity within the past few seasons has been good in terms of remaining mostly consistant with itself.

I don’t really take instances from the first few episodes of season 1 very seriously. The reason is because the show was still in the process of finding its legs, and so they were still just throwing a bunch of stuff out there to see what sticks. This is something that happens with many TV shows in their early first season. As the show goes on, the writers start to understand it better, and some things ultimately end up getting lost in translation.
 
At the time of Boast Busters, the writers probably didn’t quite know yet the extent of magic, or what abilities would qualify as advanced. For example, when Twilight did her stuff with the Ursa Minor, her horn’s aura expanded massively. That sort of thing hasn’t happened since, and we’ve seen her go on to pull off much more powerful magic. To say nothing about how specific color-coded unicorn/alicorn magic auras didn’t even become a thing until season 2.
 
Maybe you’d consider this a poor explanation, but I don’t feel like Trixie’s first appearance is a particular good indication that she’s a powerful unicorn.

One thing i’ll give the comics is that they’v Been really good with the Wonderbolts. They actually feel like RD’s friends, and the Friends Forever comics with both Spitfire and Soarin are some of my favorites in the comics entire run. I’d like to see this more in the show, which, even at best, they’ve never really gotten much past “They’re a group of good flyers that fly with RD”

Harry Houdini was also clearly shown making an elephant disappear, and David Copperfield made the entire Statue Of Liberty vanish in front of– or off to the side of, at any rate– a live audience. I always got the impression with Trixie that she could make it look like she was doing all those things with stagecraft and prestidigitation rather than _{~real magic}~ (aside from, like, telekinesis obviously), which is way more impressive than just “using magic”.

I think what Starlight meant by “real magic” was magic that has a more practical use and not used for stage shows and tricks. Like how near the end of Boast Busters how none of her stage magic could take down the Ursa Minor.

Ugh, to hell with magic in EG. It doesn’t need to be explained! It’s magic! It makes random stuff happen because that’s just what it does! It makes normal people turn into terrifying monsters! It gives dogs a permanent ability to talk! It’s just MAGIIIIIIC!!!!

I always took the “real magic” thing as a case of self-deprecating No True Scotsman.
 
It’s like the comparing a punch between some noodle armed wimp vs…
 

 
They’re both “real” punches, but put them side by side then one becomes a Real Punch while the other is an embarassment.

Here’s your explanation on magic. It’s where a unicorn draws their strength. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, it binds the universe together. It is not some microorganism bullshit and it’s not some nihilistic rambling, it needs hard work and effort out into it to master it, so you can just get instantly good at it. And it’s not some magical freaking catch all to just go off on a whim and do whatever you freaking like! So don’t be going around burning libraries with it because of some stupid made up power you just have! And screw you Rian Johnson for making the original trilogy pointless with all that crap!
