And even with that reduction in copper, pennies are still more than twice as expensive to make as they are worth. The only major reason they haven’t been taken out of circulation is the zinc lobbyists. (They’ve already been eliminated on army bases, and when we got rid of the half-penny it was worth more than what a dime is worth now. You’d simply round all transactions to the nearest nickle instead of the nearest penny, both up and down, coming to the exact same average price as we currently have. A penny adds roughly 3 seconds to every transaction on average between picking them out and giving them back as change.)
Part of my job is running a register so I deal with pennies constantly and will be more than overjoyed when we finally get rid of the useless things.
American silver coins (except bullion coins) are made with 90% silver and 10% copper.
All nickels have been made with 75% copper and 25% nickel since the first nickels rolled off the press in 1866, with the exception of the nickels from 1942-1945, when they were made with 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese due to the use of nickel for the American war effort.
Sounds about right, as full Silver Coinage stopped ‘round 1964 IIRC. So you might want to hang on to any Washinron Quarters from that Year of before. Assuming that any are even still in circulation that, is.
Fun fact US Silver Coins are NOT Stirling Grade, 92.5% like other countries have, or had. American Junk Silver is (or at least was), only 71% pure. With Copper making up the rest of this.
Oddly enough they don’t mint Copper Penney’s anymore either since they switched to using to Copper Plated Zinc in the early 80s.
Ah. I think until the 1960’s they were pure nickel, though…
Nickels are 25% nickel; the rest is copper.
