That is very true.
It also has to do with the pony that he assists. Twilight tends to try take on large tasks individually, as displayed by the fact that she’s the only Princess who’s exhausted from setting up the Friendship Summit. Given that Twilight has been the most constant presence in Spike’s life, which is is still at one of the most impressionable points of his development, some of her mannerisms likely bled over to him.
Thinking about it, part of this could be explained with Owl’s Well That Ends Well. Spike didn’t want Owlowicious as Twilight’s nighttime assistant as he felt he wouldn’t be needed anymore. While obviously he’s learned from that, there’s probably still some part of him that wants to do all the work himself so he can help out the best that he can. Even after all the ponies were upset with Twilight in Princess Spike, Spike was still confident in himself that he’d done something right at least in keeping Twilight asleep through everything like Cadance had asked of him. Considering how often Spike gets neglected, and oh boy does he, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he’d put a whole bunch of work onto himself so he could try to prove himself as being as useful as ever, especially right after he’d been ignored by the audience of ponies in favor of the princesses. While Spike isn’t unable to ask for help, such as when he gets the Cutie Mark Crusader’s to help him in Just For Sidekicks, he’s a lot more prideful in his role as Twilight’s assistant, partially because of his fear of being abandoned by her as seen in The Crystal Empire part 2.
TL;DR: Spike wants to help Twilight by himself and be useful because nobody cares about him otherwise.
But Cadence asked Spike to help Twilight get some rest. She should be willing to help by taking some of Twilight’s work.
Well, that would seem a bit rude of him, forcing all of those problems onto Cadence, plus he was a bit under pressure at the time. :P
You’d think he would say ‘Just ask Princess Cadence’ or something.
Though, to be honest, you’d be surprised at how often the simple and obvious solutions evade people.
So, basically, it was a Spike episode.
I know, right? XD
