Looking back at the conversation, I think they were saying 1 million Chinese Yuan - which has the same symbol, and is roughly equivalent to £113k as of 11 July 2020.

Yes, but my point was that the tax code in America sides with well off and rich people instead of poor people. We don’t have welfare, we have wealthfare. Counterintuitively, replacing those tax breaks with universal programs would be better for everyone.

My parents just bought a house with ¥1 million (~$150K) of down payment, their money.
All taxes are calculated before my parents get paid. They then receive the money with income tax removed, which is 65% of their cash salary. The income tax is 35%.
