I realized a couple of interesting things from my last post to this one. First, while I would tirelessly argue back and forth with Twi about making sure all the minor details lined up, I didn’t do the same thing with Kit. In looking back on a couple of the pages, I realized the second interesting detail; the showroom of unimportant dresses that Rarity was showing off had not 3 but 9 dresses in it. There’s a kind of derp looking rack with at least 6 blobs that are supposed to be dresses. Yet another detail that I thought of just now is that Rarity also manages making sure that her studio has all of the necessary materials for making a dress; she’s constantly off digging for gems and had Spike go on a shopping trip in the comic itself. If she was working at a production studio founded by two rich and powerful ponies, it would be more time she’d have for her own work.
One more page to say what would happen probably would have helped give a better feeling of conclusion. I thought that it was a story that both solidified Spike and Rarity’s relationship with each other and allowed them to both grow as characters without making one seem like the workhorse of the other. If you disagree then that’s your opinion and so be it.
Well, that… erm… didn’t work, I… guess? I mean, I still thought that, but I’m just someone who analyzes everything…
Reading Fancy’s last words is crucial: He specifically states that the order shouldn’t be a problem if she’s capable of making “a dress like this after completing your orders”, but remember that he’s enthralled by the dress that’s already there, not the others. The four pieces a week wouldn’t be simple dresses; Fancy Pants paid absolutely no mind to the regular orders, after all, so he requires very specific orders; far from the standard dresses that were made, and although the fresh orders may not be overly showy, Sapphire Shores HAS been known to change her stance on orders, and this would likely result in different ‘flavors’ for various trends.
The problem isn’t the effort, but rather, how they’d know what to add to the dress. The base blueprints seen here: >>714743 Hold no indication of the second ‘top’-section of the dress (which is actually a two-parter, consisting of an inner and outer layer). My question is, how would they know about what the dress should look like, when it was far from completion? In fact, in the image you showed, there wasn’t even an inner-layer yet.
That patience and understanding, along with Rarity’s oblivious nature, was essentially the catalyst before they had sex: Spike feeling underappreciated and not capable of handling her ignorance anymore. What made this worse is Rarity stating that she was aware of his feelings for her. How long can Spike be expected to wait? It really wouldn’t be “as long as it takes based around Rarity’s needs”, because there’s still no true indication that their relationship would work beyond a workplace-relationship, as a romantic one.
This is really what needed to be addressed: Some sort of “Things went on, and they went well”-based picture. I want to say “epilogue”, but really, it could’ve been solved with another page of Rarity thanking Spike with another kiss and Sweetie Belle going “YES!” from behind a curtain. Hardly an epilogue, really…
Yeah, it was obvious that they didn’t know Spike and Sweetie Belle were there, but the problem was what really qualified as “sweeping Rarity off her hooves”. She basically said she would “give Spike a chance”, which is far from feeling like she “needed him”, which was what would have qualified as her really being swept off her feet, rather than just going “Ugh, that was IT? Just a small kiss? Is that all I mean to you?”.
All in all, Spike and Rarity getting together would’ve solidified two of the stories, but the end of the story is more like them thinking “You need us, right? We can stay a part of your life, right?”, as opposed to an ending that would’ve been more… conclusive.
I know I won’t be able to change the minds of anyone who worked on it, far from it: I’m hardly the type to listen to MYSELF sometimes… The comic’s already over, so I guess it’s just how “You can’t please everyone”… It’s just how I saw things. That’s all.
Twi was wanting Spike to be Rarity’s assistant at her new job, but I wanted to make sure that that wouldn’t happen so that people wouldn’t think exactly what you thought. I think that there’s enough evidence that shows it’s plausible for Rarity to do her own work. Rarity said she had spent the whole week doing orders for other people, but never specified how many she was doing. If it was more than 4 then she’s capable of doing more than 4 in a week. That, coupled with how much work she did in suited for success (even though we don’t know how much time passed over the course of that one episode) means that Rarity can reasonably churn out 4 dress designs a week with no help. Another thing to consider is that if Rarity were head designer of a production studio, she’d likely be doing more just conceptual design rather than actual dressmaking. Also, she’d just make the other dresses with less impressive gems. They’re often found under inches of topsoil.
There’s a pretty good picture of the dress before they finished it here. >>736913 Looking back, it looks like a lot of work, but between Sweetie Belle’s budding magical abilities and sewing knowledge she picked up from Rarity along with Spike’s opposable thumbs, fire breath and claws sharp enough to etch into hot gold, it’s probably doable over the course of several hours.
I’ll admit, there’s definitely plausibility of Rarity’s work affecting their relationship, but she already manages to find time for her friends and saving the day with running a boutique all on her own. Regardless of how much more work a new job would be, Spike would stay in the relationship and understand that Rarity’s work is important. That’s also what Spike ended up conveying to Rarity through his inscription. Then again, maybe Spike would be the only thing that would help Rarity relax from a long hard day at work IFYANOWATIMSAYIN.
The short answer of it is “Regardless whether or not Rarity can deal with her new workload, Spike can be patient and understanding of Rarity’s needs.”
I think you might be missing a little bit of the point with the story. There was a few storylines happening here in the same comic that all came together at the end. The story of Spike getting Rarity, the story of Sweetie Belle wanting her sister to be in a relationship and the story of Rarity going to the party. Two of those were solved with Spike and Rarity having a little more confidence in themselves, while the third was solved by giving Rarity a meaningful gift that nopony else could have given her. Though they were planning on only doing it for Rarity, they ended up doing something that helped to conclude all 3 storylines. By helping to make the dress, incorporating the symbol of their love together and adding further sentimental value to it by telling Rarity to follow her dreams through it, he makes sure that Rarity knows that their relationship is something truly special. By dragging Spike into helping Rarity to finish the dress, Sweetie Belle helps both Spike and Rarity to be happy with each other as well as herself since she won’t have to deal with Rarity’s love life affecting her as much anymore. Rarity gets to cement in a position as head of design at a fashion company with the dress being the thing that convinces everyone that she’s the one for the job. Maybe some allusion to whether or not the job and their relationship works out or not would be nice, but I feel like they at least have a good shot at it.
Spike swept Rarity off her hooves 12 pages ago when he confessed his love for her. This is just to make sure they stay swept. Rarity realized that she had treated Spike badly in the past and that she was not going to in the future. Just in case it wasn’t obvious, Spike and Sweetie Belle were hiding, Fancy Pants and Sapphire Shores didn’t realize they were there and Rarity was looking at and really talking to Spike and Sweetie Belle in the last panel. Actually that’s kind of important, WAS that obvious? We tried to make it obvious.

I suppose the end really is open to interpretation. It says “good end” right in the tags, but so many things come up as a result of this last page.
How much work did they manage to do on the dress compared to how far-along it was earlier? If the fire ruby-choker is prominent in it, how the heck would she be able to obtain the necessary products for four pieces a WEEK? And how appreciative would Rarity be of a relationship with Spike after this, considering she’s basically going to be working a vast majority of the time, now?
Like I said, it’s based heavily around perception and taking every event into consideration. Given the original story of the comic being geared towards Spike showing the confidence to make a move with Rarity, the ending seemed like it should’ve had a bit more focus on the character we cared the most about the state of: Spike, rather than Rarity. This didn’t seem like the solidification of a relationship, just that she’d need someone to work with her to produce orders, but maybe that’s just how I see it.
Honestly, I was rather let down with the way it ended, considering how much I was rooting for Spike to sweep Rarity off her hooves in some way.
