Yes, well, they succeeded in creating a woobie for a large subset of the audience.
I’m not going digging for the video right now, but the writers admitted that Spike was Lauren Faust’s creation, they have no idea what to do with him, they’d get rid of him if they could, but since they can’t, they use him as a Butt Monkey.
They can’t even manage to characterize him right. Do you really want them to try to come up with backstory for him?
