Like Clark flying at the very end of Smallville?
Hmm. If done right, it could be pretty neat.
Yeah, it’s an appreciative amount of healthy optimism.
The way the show did it makes it something that can be applied to more characters (and people not in cartoonland) and situations, and it enables stories like this.
She had speed, no doubt, but I don’t think it was many times greater than terminal…
In any case, I really don’t suggest hitting the ground at terminal speed. If pegasi have, I’d chalk that up to cartoon physics rather than canon.
Also, if you’re hurtling towards the ground, you’re probably either braking or turning (So that your downward component of velocity is rapidly shrinking), thus, unless she was trying to kill herself (rather unlikely), I think she was under terminal speed.
Because of the way that the sound effects and gazes of her friends were going, Rainbow didn’t crash from losing speed and then falling out of the sky, but rather crashed into the geound with most of her normal speed still propelling her. Remember thag Rainbow can change direction on a literal dime, so there’s no need for her to accelerate downward to hit the ground at far greater than terminal velocity.
Edited
Even at a few tens of feet, she wouldn’t reach terminal velocity before impact from gravity alone.
Fun fact; if an aircraft is flying faster than terminal velocity, then this implies it has a T/W > 1 (ie, it can fly straight up). At least with a few naive assumptions (such as constant force from the engines without regard to speed, etc).
But terminal velocity is actually quite fast. Of course Rainbow’s got a T/W > 1, but point is; even if she were going fast and made a turn that went out of control, then hit the ground, she still probably would’ve been going slower than terminal unless she spent a few seconds intentionally building speed in a dive - which few seconds translates into more than a hundred feet (which is, roughly, 6-10 stories or so, so not actually all that low).
Edited
I’m not sure terminal velocity is dangerous to pegasi at all; Rainbow was certainly going far faster than mere terminal velocity when she smashed into the ground in Read it and Weep, and all she broke was a wing.
Interesting thought; I wonder if she can provide enough thrust to reduce her terminal velocity to a safe speed?
ie, could she glide (though it’s not really “gliding”, it kind of effectively is)? Much like how a bird with clipped wings “flies”.
I’m the opposite; I would much prefer that she manages to fly on her own eventually, instead of with a prosthetic or tool of some sort.

Again, Tank’s flying thingy.
Though it’d need to like, be on her head or something so her head clears the blades. But a chinstrap in that case would basically just hang her. So, like, on her head, but supported by a full harness? I dunno. Something like that. It’d be kinda tricky but I’m sure you could make it work.
Again, that’s just using Tank’s thingy, though. Prosthetic wing extensions could work, too. Who knows, maybe she’ll be like handi-capable - like those big bouncy prosthetic legs that allow people to run way faster - maybe she’ll get an extended prosthetic wingspan.
I personally will only really approve if prosthetics are used. They have shown other ponies using various devices including one who had his back legs in a unique wheeling device, and the idea of someone using prosthetics or a replacement isn’t a bad thing, nor should it be looked down upon.
@Daneasaur
I hope she is able to fly by the end of the series.
The only way that can happen without the fandom imploding is if they used prosthetics of some sort.
Heh. Selfless. That’s an interesting take on it - I was kind of thinking the opposite, actually, since it’s her projecting her own fears of failure onto Gabby, in a sense she sees it as, “if Gabby can get her mark, then maybe I can fly!”
But, more directly, it was a selfless motive since that projection has to be implied, meanwhile her words directly state it’s because she understands Gabby, and thus doesn’t want Gabby to fail for Gabby’s sake.
I just appreciate the humor value of using something like this to see how it fucks up.
it’s this
I pewrsonally prefer plaintalk due to the naturalness of the voices and the ease of use by being able to read any text simply by selecting it and using a specific key or combination.
