Unfortunately Democrats suck at PR. Any number of the stunts this administration has done would allow the Dems to ride their way to the presidency a dozen times over, but instead they continually let the Reps turn it around and blame them with no rebuttal larger than cowardly mewling.
Honestly the best that can be hoped for is that seeing the damage a shutdown is doing means that the Republicans cornerstone “small government”lie won’t resonate anymore.

I mean, I get the need for national security, but the time to beef up border security with Mexico was back after 9/11, not now. I remember reading articles in the likes of Time magazine and The Economist during both the Bush Jr and Obama presidencies about the efforts they were taking to secure the border, so the border as far as I can tell is pretty secure all things considered in terms of physical security.
Besides, as mentioned earlier most of the illegal immigration from Latin America is from visa overstayers, not people sneaking across the border.
I’d really like to meet the border wall evangelist that’s managed to convince Trump that a border wall is some nirvana solution to America’s southern border security situation.

Then Fox News happened. Ann Coulter got on air and told the audience (RE:Trump) not to let brown people into the country. Lou Dobbs said Trump would be weak for backing off the wall. Lindsay Graham said it’d be the end of his presidency.
So Trump, being the gullible dumbass he is, took the bait.

NumbersUSA, another conservative group that presses for stricter immigration policies, circulated an article last month suggesting that Mr. Trump drop his wall demand in favor of a plan to mandate that all employers use E-Verify, an electronic system that checks immigration status for prospective employees.The wall “has sucked political capital from the pursuit of other, and arguably better, means to deter illegal immigrants,” wrote Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute.
The only reason Trump wants the wall is because it gets applause from the rubes, and the only reason the rubes want the wall is because it carries greater symbolic value than, say, E-Verify. Of course, the message conveyed by that symbol is one of hate and fear: “FUCK THOSE DIRTY _[ethnic slur]_S!” Which is why the Democrats are so opposed to it now, when they may have been more flexible in the past.

It took me a while to process that, because the implications blow my mind: The border wall was some political gimmick in order to help Trump appeal to the “muh illegal immigration!” crowd despite being to indifferent towards the idea, who then supports the idea, who is now threatening to take money desperately needed for things like disaster relief and spend it on some boondoggle that will do dick-and-all in relation to its stated purpose.
Things like this make me wonder if even his good ideas, like pulling troops out of Syria, are actually his ideas and not the ideas of the organisational inertia-driven bureaucrats that actually run the country…

According to the latest poll I saw over 50% of the country blames Trump/GOP and only about 20-30% blames the Dems. So it’s only a minority drinking the Kool-Aid.
Considering 20-30% of the country is around the size usually given for his “base” supporters, who would follow him to hell and back they would, I think that might explain why there’s any blame for the Democrats at all at this point.
