tl;dr dem presidential candidate that ran against Bush Sr. Media portrayed him as being too soft re. foreign policy, so he set up a photo op of him riding a tank. It was considered so cringe it tanked his campaign.

Michael Dukakis famously piloted a tank in a publicity stunt during the 1988 election in an effort to one-up Bush Sr. on defense. It backfired horrendously.

He was the Dem candidate for the 1988 Election against George Bush Sr. George had military cred because he was a Navy veteran and fought in the Pacific front during WW2, and this made Dukakis seem “weak” by comparison since he had no military history and had the background as a lawyer.

In order to make himself seem more “badass”, Dukakis infamously done a stunt where he put on a military uniform and took pictures of himself riding a tank. This backfired tremendously since instead of making him look cool, it just made him look like an embarrassment and was seen by many as the final nail in the coffin for his election chances, which then cause him to lose to Bush on Election Day

“Dukakis in a Tank” is now a meme/shorthand for “This person just royally screwed over their chances of winning”

Just saw a video of it. Trump and MAGA are running with Biddie calling them “garbage”. He showed up in the truck.

This is anecdotal, but it sounds like Puerto Ricans seeing this are interpreting it as him doubling down on calling their home island garbage.

I’m gonna need another source here for 100% confirmation, but it looks like Harris is actually pressing Bibi on the issue.

If this account of things does indeed get confirmed (supposedly relayed on Morning Joe I see), I will be pleasantly surprised that she’s taking the issue seriously. I know libs insist that she’s sticking (mostly) with Biden’s Israel policy on the campaign trail because it would be damaging to her campaign to publicly break with the sitting President and could create an even bigger rift in the Democratic Party than there already is over the issue.

Would be wild if that assessment was accurate.

I don’t know. Biden’s policy was not super popular so replacing it with a more popular policy would be good. I think the biggest thing is promise people that the US will never send soldiers in support of Israel.

I think it should be obvious that if Harris said anything negative about Biden’s policies or that she’d’ve done anything different, we’d never hear the end of “BACKSTABBER HARRIS”, “HARRIS THROWS JOE UNDER THE BUS”, “COUP AT THE DNC, HARRIS TORCHES BIDEN’S LEGACY”.

I fucking hate it but it’s the truth, as a member of the cabinet, and VP at that, she can’t say anything that goes against Biden without 1. Undermining the current admin, and 2. Appearing to backstab Biden.

Yeah, that’s the main reason why I find it at least somewhat plausible, though I hate to think about it. I know that Biden’s freakishly pro-Israel even by the standards of other pro-Israel Democrats. And Bibi’s using that to lead him around by the nose.

There’s also the fact that Netanyahu wants Trump a lot more than Harris, something I don’t think gets talked about enough
