RL ponies are, like all equines, born precocious. They’re able to walk around independently almost from birth, and can fend for themselves a hell of a lot better than human babies of the same relative age.
 
So it shouldn’t be surprising that the colts and fillies in Ponyville are a lot more independent than human children.

Plus, there seems no qualms about them leaving home to seek their ways in life at very young ages, like Aj and Cheese and maybe others.
 
Makes one wonder what pony childrearing is really like.

Twilight does seem to have an inappropriate relationship with children. I mean she keeps one as a servant who sleeps at the foot of her bed. Then think about the odd Mary Poppins way she talks to the CMC in Showstoppers and Twilight Time. She lets them borrow books with recipies for love potions. Of course there was the time that she magically got the girls into a fist fight so that she could break it up.
 
Come to think of it, the whole town has a bizarre way around children. They wander the town completely unsupervised, and it is not like Ponyville is this safe haven where nothing dangerous happens. As protective of Applebloom as Applejack is supposed to be, she either does not know about or does not care about her little sister trying every extreme sport that Scootaloo can imagine. Sweetie Belle’s parents seem to pawn her off on Rarity whenever. Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie pick up strangers’ kids off the street. Conductors let a pack of them board trains alone. There seems to be no general concern for their well-being
