Yeah. The G1 movie is technically not based on a tv show because the tv show wouldn’t be released until after the movie’s released. And it picked up where the movie as left off. The two MLP G1 specials were set prior to the events of the G1 film because they’re released before the movie was released. The 2017 movie was the only My Little Pony movie to be based off on the tv show. And so were Hasbro’s two other cartoons that were made back in the 1980s such as Transformers and G.I. Joe.
Of course there isn’t!
…Nothing can stop
THE SMOOOOOOOOZE! :D
What is there to prove about? Quick search on the internet all you need to realize that G1 MLP: The Movie is not a TV Movie.
That’s not necessarily a guarantee of anything; it was fairly common at the time for distributors to repackage TV movies for kiddie matinee release.
Well I just about remember seeing the original, classic MLP movie in the cinema when I was, like, 4 years old - I don’t remember it very clearly, but I know I did see it there (our parents used to take my big sis and me to the cinema to see any new little kids’ movies when we were little - MLP, Care Bears 1 and 2, etc…).
So there should surely be a widescreen version somewhere…unless it was maybe lost/junked after making the rounds of the cinemas?
I’m still hoping for 4K release of G4 series. It’s Flash, so it’s possible to re-render it in 4K.
@TexasUberAlles
According to this, it was always 1.33:1 - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091584/technical (a.k.a. 4:3)

Strange, I assume It would’ve finally been in widescreen, since I’ve read an article that Rock-A-Doodle was cropped in widescreen to fit the screen in theaters, I thought they did that for this movie. I’m also still trying to figure out if they did the same for Tom and Jerry: the Movie.
Edited because: More info
I swear I remember seeing it advertised in a kiddie matinee newspaper ad as a callow youth, but no idea if it was pillarboxed or not.
Wasn’t it in theaters for a bit? They should have made it widescreen for that, at least.
Disappointing, but wasn’t it meant from the start to be a TV movie? Not a lot of widescreen CRTs in the mid-’80s.
It doesn’t look like it was ever produced in widescreen to begin with: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/My-Little-Pony-Blu-ray/213931/
I’m definitely a fan of both movies!
Edited
Even though I don’t really like the ‘86 version
@northern haste
Yes, it’s a problem I have with TV-based movies. What, I can’t have a problem with that?
If the sequel to the 2017 film is a series finale film (like Teacher’s Pet), I would love the title to be “Friendship Is Forever”.
in b4 rebuttal due to leaks and G5 and shit
@Hollowfox the Stallion
I think this was the only time actually seen people complain about a TV show based movie just being called the movie.
I actually liked it when I was little. lol (Don’t look at me like that, my older sister used to be obsessive with MLP.)
@Hollowfox the Stallion
Maybe the sequel will. “My Little Pony 2: The Search for Curly’s Gold!”
Edited
By that logic, the Simpsons Movie or the SpongeBob Squarepants Movie or the Wild Thornberrys Movie or The Rugrats Movie or Regular Show: The Movie could have a subtitle instead of naming it just “The Movie”
Edited
I think one working title was Friendship Adventure.
Edited
I think it’s more of a celebration of MLP as a whole, not the movie specifically.
