And frankly, modern cartoons that are always on-model, or “perfect,” or reuse the same 5 facial expressions honestly look very homogenized, machine-made, and kinda souless really.
I kinda prefer imperfectness honestly.
That’s the culture we live in nowadays though - everybody’s looking to get internet-famous by creating the next meme around some tiny off-model mistake in one frame of an animation.
If memes had been as big back in the 80s as they are today, then scenes like alicorn!Baby Surprise would’ve been memes probably.
Edited
And now when ever the show goes off model people lose their minds and think it’s the show trying to create memes
Yeah, occasionally off-model frames seemed to make their movements and expressions seem somehow more natural and fluid most of the time.
Also laughable and cute af. :3
Possibly, many ’80s & ’90s American cartoons were animated overseas in Japan (including Inspector Gadget, the movie “Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland,” the first season of the original TMNT, many of the “Disney Afternoon” Shows, Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, and even the intro sequence to the “Super Mario World” show) which is why they at times look a bit anime-esc, or have anime-like facial expressions (including the “cross popping vein” visual gag) at times.
I kinda miss those kinda shows.
