I admit, the new form seems kinda odd to me, but reading your post puts an interesting perspective on things. I have to say, something like that would be a very “Lauren Faust” thing for the writers to do. By that, I refer to how she put many behaviors to real ponies in the MLP ponies, so having the changelings mirror bugs, even in the transformation aspect works well with that.

But quality of that design comparing to other is just very low, even with those colors they could do way better job looking at them I have just bad fanfic vibe.
 
Second thing, there is clearly some press from up that they make that kind of drastic change, otherwise what point would be changing Thorax wings to that sparkly ones to just completely abandon this plot thread

Initial intentions aren’t really a point in my argument I’m afraid, because my point is simply that from start to finish, the only drive whatsoever in making these designs was not toys, exclusively. The designs make sense to real life bugs, so obviously it’s not. :P Many bugs in nature are bright with extra appendages, many bugs transform from something bland to something colorful. Regardless whether or not the initial conception was to sell toys or not, the designs were also created to mimic the many aspects of bug life, and the proof is simply that they do. DHX does well in taking Habsro’s demands and making it fit at least somewhat in the show, and if that was the case for this time, then this time is no different.

I fear you misunderstand what people mean when they talk about this sort of thing being done just to sell toys. The showrunners might have gone with a design that makes sense with or follows the theme of the changelings, but if the reason they’re doing it in the first place is because Hasbro requested that they come up with new designs for changelings or to add more colour to them or what have you, then the change has been made for the purpose of selling toys.
 
I’m not saying that’s definitely why it’s been done, of course.

When they will have sale drop :P why throw new stuff when old still is high selling ? Look at how long is between new stuff (not recolors or same model things)

Nah I’m pretty sure they were throw not basing on anything, because you can see how cheap and lackluster those gradients were done.  
I’m just not seeing this, its same like Fluttershy is based on Maple moth and you know what moth are bugs too, if you search enough you will find everything can be based on something no matter how stupid.

I personally couldn’t give two shits less if you like the new color schemes or not, based on personal preference. I’m just trying to make sure you’re not trying to say the new color schemes were thrown together, being based off absolutely nothing from real life. x) Because they’re clearly not. Reflective or not, those colors are the colors those bugs are known for, so that’s the spectrum of colors the artists were going for when designing these new forms. Same difference as far as the argument I’m trying to makes goes.

Lore wise they are from folklore practically they first apperance is just ponified folklore.  
I would see show lore more into same thing like they did earlier, but that design is not even close to beetle that you posted, they are reflective black color normally not crayon vomit deer with wings and wing tail… (da fuq) and that gems uhh that could be good but its just too big its looks like some kind of tumor.
 
If they didn’t wanted to make it just for toys, they would probably make it like Reversalis or something like that, but they were ‘black and evil’ still.
