Thank you - This is a great explanation of what could possibly go wrong if the United States tries socialism. It seems that many people haven forgotten their history lessons from school… or simply never got them.

But I am a slave to debt in a government that only listens to the top 1% of all of its citizens and often acts to further the needs of those 1% even if it means harming or killing less-fortunate people.
You are right that these issues are independent of our economy. The issue is that we have a corrupt, poorly-regulated system.

It’s human existence.
Some are better, though, even if only in an “Not id, but ego” sort of way. Henry Ford believed in paying his employees “enough to own a Model T.”
Society is fascinating in that a lot of things go like this;
It’s a game where you can {make 4 coins, and give 3 away}, or {make 2 coins and keep them both}. Clearly, then, from a selfish standpoint, the best move is to make 2 coins and keep them. This will give you a leg up in competition. If everyone in a society makes 2 coins, then they get 2. But, if everyone in a society makes 4, then on average, everyone gets 4. So even though everyone made the decision that wasn’t the best, individually, every individual ended up better off.
It’s fascinating.
And you say capitalist, but it’s been true of every society, capitalist or otherwise. It’s just in this capitalist one we have, everyone has the right to buy, own property, sell the commissions they draw, not have their stuff randomly confiscated “for the people,” don’t get taken and disappear to the secret police in the night because they said something bad about the government, get randomly accused of an impossible plan and end up spending 11 years in a gulag, or get put to death for a groundless accusation, etc.
It’s part of being a poor person in an old-fashioned capitalist society. You exist to serve the executive class as a resource, and they provide you with enough to survive but not enough to advance while you live in fear of losing your job to disability, downsizing, automation, buyout, or whatever your bosses decide to do that could put you out of a job while they rake in the profits or stay in businesses. Meanwhile, you have all sorts of predatory industries out for every cent you have and that will do what it takes to take it from you, even if it’s unethical and immoral.
It’s cultured greed and exploitation.
I don’t think it’s a particularly new problem. I know in the industrial era many poor classes worked like 18 hours a day six days a week, and in Asia they don’t have Saturdays off from anything. Not even sure about Sundays. To say nothing of even more primitive eras. People often romanticize agricultural life, but they can only do so because they don’t actually have to do it - to work 12, 14, 16, 18 hour days of hard labor.

That gets into the problems of modern society where there seems to be no moderate area between overworked and underworked. It’s why anxiety and stress are becoming such huge issues now.
For me, it’s the opposite. Due to disability, mental illness, and an emotionally-taxing family, I don’t get out of bed some days due to crippling depression or anxiety. Some days I just go back to sleep.
Life shouldn’t be so exhausting… I don’t want to be lazy, of course, but overwork is real.
