I don't think it's a particularly new problem. I know in the industrial era many poor classes worked like 18 hours a day six days a week, and in Asia they don't have Saturdays off from anything. Not even sure about Sundays. To say nothing of even more primitive eras. People often romanticize agricultural life, but they can only do so because they don't actually have to do it - to work 12, 14, 16, 18 hour days of hard labor.
