I am not a mod, but don’t think changing the tags is a good idea.
Derpibooru uses artist:php* tags for a reason.

That is correct - artists with a tag of the form “artist:php[#]” have asked that we anonymize their art. Some do it because they are rebranding, some do it because they are preparing for a job interview or simply because they no longer draw art like that and don’t want it showing up as something they have done.
In a lot of cases, the alternative to anonymizing the art is to delete it, so if something has an “artist:php[#]” tag on it, there’s a good chance that it’s art that we are trying to preserve on the site and otherwise would not be able to host.

Personally, I’m more a fan of just handling it when these questions come up - they’re exceedingly rare.
Saying something about it in the description of their tags might be a good idea, but I’m also a fan of wanting to respect their anonymity and trying to draw as little attention to them as possible.
When some people see that there’s a secret, they get very tenacious about uncovering it.
