Twilight was never mean to them though. She just never realized the importance and value of these mares trying to be her friends at the time. Spike’s reminiscing was one hell of a wake-up call.
In other words, her family or those who basically WERE family.
Gotta feel kinda sorry still for the Canterlot crew tho, they spent years trying to get Twilight to be their friend, yet all it took for the Mane Six was one, slightly longer, night. Those Elements of Harmony must’ve been SOMETHING, huh?

Her other only friends before the first episode were Celestia, Spike and her parents.

Look, Twilight barely got the idea of having friends, and the ones she DID appreciate were her older brother and babysitter, in other words elder siblings. Not that hard to get.
Celestia didn’t lock Twilight up in a tower with only Spike to speak to for 15 years, the mare was just largely anti-social/insert whatever diagnosis here.
