It is just a joke. And considering how the fandom wanted to be all standing above us, but ever since that has endulged in porn and oh so subtle innuendos about sex in the show itself (fusion, anyone) I think making fun of Stene Universe is more than legit.

Although to be honest, I consider Jasper, Peridot and Lapislazuli to be the best characters of the show anyway. Jasper is Raditz, Peridot is just a bumbling manipulative mad scientist and Lapislazuli and post season 1 Luna should make up a group for woobies who are in need of a hug.
 
Kinda weird, seeing the freaking main characters being a bit less popular in my eyes than two despicable villains and some chick that had not much bearing on the overall plot so far and may only exist for the writers to create some false melodrama.
 
BTW, theory: Who believe that if the gems ever invaded Equestria, Sombra would wreck their shit?

but back with Connie, at her “brainwashing”, as you call it, I think at the part when she was to take on Pearl by herself was her way of staging a ‘training accident’.
 
but before we go TOO Yandere-Pearl, here’s a theory:  
Jasper may be a Fusion, but is unaware of the circumstances. it can be seen in her coloring, using the three various of jasper gems, more than likely as a Composite of forced Fusion while still in development. adding on to the fact that Malachite has two extra sets of arms, adding to the other two sets, making four.  
and look at her Gem: its like the Gem Shards, narrow and with points, as compared to the other Gems with rounded areas.

I am not really going to add anything to what you said, as your opinion kind of fits my interpretation of Pearl. You know, seeing her as an idol, getting overly obsessed and quite frankly being mor ethan just unfair towards Greg and such.
 
At the same time, I like to point out how I think that all that + her behavior and reasoning in Rose’s Scabbard makes her really come of like the worst. Amethyst tends to be rather violent if she wants to and leashes out for her emotional shortcomings, but at least she is honest about her emotions in some way when poked hard enough. Pearl tries to reason her way out of it all the time instead of acknowledging that she has issues. And yet she is for the most part one of the most condescending characters in the show. She sees humans more like pets, actually throws it at Greg because she is that obsessed with Rose and her blind loyalty towards Rose makes me wonder, if the only reason she ever bothered to defend earth was, because Rose wanted it to do. I would not be surprised if she had just started a genocide on earth had Rose ever given her the order for it.
 
I am also rather disgusted at the Sword episode, cause the way she was teaching Connie was actually pretty much brainwashing, turning Connie into a mindless drone to protect Steven. Come on, she would make a great trainer for IS at this point. And why all of that? Because she can’t get over Rose. Lady needs a therapist.
