I dunno; Vav’s gotten away with a LOT of stuff not being questioned, to the point where it’s less of a “mountain” and more of its own occupied planet under his name, filled with problems that have developed sentient intelligence, to create jobs, families, create food…
… anyway…
In one of the previous pages during this fight, about a quarter to a third of the entire page is dedicated to explaining the “charm” that Little AJ has. I just don’t see why there wouldn’t be something similar for something like this. Even if it’s explained later, it’s one of those situations where everyone aside from a select few, would likely treat it as normal, being a part of “Crazy Future”.
Funny you should mention explanations: it’s one thing when you have background characters spelling out moves/powerups/whatever whilst the main brawl rages, but the participants themselves stopping to blow hot air about this technique or that? Heinous speedbump in my book. If the fight’s that pitched, neither party should have enough breath for that crap unless it’s an utter You Suck Speech(C)-enabling curbstomp.
As for this particular example of Wacky Essence-Weapon Distillation(R), I’d give it a pass mainly due to this ‘verse’s high level of ambient madness.

Padded-Out isn’t as bad when things can be explained throughout the course of it being padded out.
Here, we’re in the middle of a three-page section that goes totally unexplained, and is solely meant to “close” the fight.
It’s a cop-out, at the worst possible time. “Now Ace is a sword, but could also be other things.”

Well, it did bust out the Alien(C) jaw & a bunch of blade-tendrils several pages back, but those are more along the lines of natural weaponry. For that matter, we never see Fluffy damage/threaten anything prior to the fight-this might be a case of misunderstanding & self-defense.
