They can rarely be polar opposites. But they can’t be the exact same fucking character archetype.
 
Both characters need to be able to play their strengths amd weaknesses off of each other, and grow together.

I guess, but that falls short if they don’t share any qualities. As in, no empathy. My suspension of disbelief can only last for so long.

No, I might actually like Rarity + Big Mac, just the fact that I enjoy farmer + classy lady relationship.  
But Rarity + AJ is much better and popular.
