Perhaps, it’s been around a long time. In fact, ironically even the Japanese use it in some of their animes.  
(Though, I guess it’s like how Americans make fun of white people to.)
 
My friend Anna said one of the animators/artists for Disney’s “Mulan” came to her animation class once. He showed off some character designs of his of Asian characters, (some from the movie) some that looked very “un-P.C.,” and remarked, “Yeah, I know we’re not supposed to stereotype in America, but I really do know some guys who look like this.”  
(Also, said artist was also Asian. They had alot of Asian people work on the movie.)
