Well said. I once wrote a fanfic in the powerpuff girls fandom, in which the girls became a couple. Several readers demanded that I write a “twist” in which it was revealed that they weren’t actually sisters after all. I responded by saying that that would kinda undercut the storyline by making the relationship more acceptable and that it would seem I was too scared to write the very story I was writing. xD
Whee, I get to be the first to boo! XD
Anyway, the “not actually related” copout has always annoyed me - an artist or writer should either have the guts to tackle the idea, or say “you know what? I don’t have the guts to, and that’s okay.” I hope the maker of this comic doesn’t wuss out.

while I’m not hating this comic for what it did (previous comment), I will give people credit in that, nowadays, getting people to proofread things for you is a lot easier, especially with a fandom This big.
What I won’t defend though, is the lack of courtesy and tact that fans showed this artist.
