I too hate this word being used wrongly. You don’t need to be southern for it to be obvious what this actually means.

As someone who’s lived in the south for over 4 decades now, and mostly in small towns and rural areas, I can confirm that it is possible to hear “y’all” to refer to one person, but it’s extremely uncommon; I’d say at least 99% of people here use it exclusively for more than one person. “All y’all” is used to mean “each and every one of you”, as opposed to “some or most of you”.
Saying something “isn’t a word” when it’s clearly being used as a word and has a definition is kind of pointless. The point is, you don’t call one person “y’all”. It means a group of people. You all.

Also people who use y’all often refer to one person with it, and use “all y’all” for more than one person
