Rarity: “Geez, it wasn’t enough that you sabotaged me on a biological level *munch*, but now you won’t stop making those BUCKING COOKIES when you know what’s going to happen! It’s like you want my figure to be ruined forever! *gulp* Did you want me lose the respect of my peers, dear!? IS THAT WHAT YOU WANTED!? Because now I look like a Celestiadamn heifer! You and your stupid genes, you prat! *sob* Stop looking at me when I’m like this! WHERE ARE THE REST OF THE BLOODY COOKIES!?”

Hmm, those initial bursts of horn/wing mojo for uni/peggie foals might’ve made up for less mobility at birth. As did surrounding cities & organized communities, natch. I’d love to know whether earthie newborns retained a bit more initial physicality.

I wonder if - biologically - eyes HAVE to be and remain spherical. Could buy back plenty of cranial volume with a slight distortion.
And the leg taper… I want to say something about it just being smoothing out the flair at the hoof along the entire leg, but that’s too flimsy, even for me.
A lot of the space of an actual foal is the folded legs, usually about three-quarters adult length. As the ponies civilised and stopped needing to be able to run almost from birth in wild herds, the foals could be born with less developed (IE: shorter) legs which made carrying much easier. Enough to allow twins.

Considering those eye sockets outsize every other facial feature combined, I’d say they remain a sticking point-and regarding legs, it’s not so much their stockiness as that bizarre reverse-taper effect where they slim down ludicrously (thinner than each hoof) at the point of torso connection. And let’s not even get into the aerodynamic lunacy of stubby pegasus wings. Fair note re: necks & spacious craniums, though you’d be surprised by what some RL critters can do with far less pound-for-pound gray matter.

I do note that plenty of expansionists go in for vaguely human-style bumps which mostly project straight down, as opposed to a lateral midsection-spread. And given the Cake kids’ proportions, foals in utero might well take up less space than their RL counterparts.

The general proportions really aren’t that far out, apart from the eyes.
Stocky legs, while distinct from real horses, are not extreme on the ponies.
The heads have to accomodate a sapient-scale brain plus whatever portion of said brain controls magic. And those massive eyes. The neck looks chunky enough to support it.
And even all the proportional issues considered, the typical is still far beyond what could be justified.

Considering the rather elastic, super-deformed proportions sported by FIM designs (not to mention onscreen twins), pronounced foal-bumps don’t strike me as unforgivably egregious. On the other hand, plenty of our fellow browsers can’t seem to get enough hyper…well, everything.

Funny thing is, if not for the LAWLMISERABLECRAVINGS face & accompanying text, I’d have chalked up Rares’ midsection to artistic style vaguely paralleling an RL horse. Evidently she’s pretty early on & loathing every second.

On a related note, this image is one of the few in the fandom that doesn’t make a pregnant mare look like some Vore-crap wherein she has a tumor the size of a sub-continet.

Spike: “Rarity?”

Rarity: Sob

Spike: You were the most beautiful mare I’ve ever laid my eyes on. You, even now, continue to be breathtaking in your expectant glow. And soon, something amazing is going to happen that will alter your looks forever…

Rarity: What?

Spike: “The second I see you hold our child for the first time, then I will get to see the most beautiful sight any male has ever witnessed.”

The plate goes crashing to the floor.

After a moment, Rarity steps forward, and as he draws his hand through her mane and across her coat, their kiss once more answers any of her concerns.

Spike then puts the quill down, walks up to her and hugs her while stroking her mane lovingly.

Rarity: *sob* Those cookies are delicious, by the way.
