That question would be interesting in the series was better written, but Otto’s being “Better” than Peter comes off more as just poor writing. It’s not that he’s doing having more success, it’s more that he’s not having the universe inexplicably dump on him the way Peter constantly did (killing a super-villain on live TV would have landed Peter Parker on death row, not giving him mass adoration).

Plus… Y’know, there’s the fact that his tenure as Spider-Man came by murdering Peter Parker and wearing his corpse.

I actually really liked this issue for the incredibly bold move it made. Not only is it a shocking twists, it also makes for a fairly interesting dilemma: if Doc Ock really is a better Spider-Man, then would it really be right for Peter to come back when the reset button is inevitably pressed?

I disagree; I’ve found the book to have problems independent of the premise. Various characters are written wildly out of character (including Jameson, one of my favorites), and the entire story is structured in an awkward manner that keeps Otto from getting egg on his face. In spite of putting no effort into impersonating Peter’s personality, nobody’s noticed the change.

What’s more, the premise has more problems than simply not having Peter in the main role; When you have a hero who’s such a bastard, who cares if he wins? It’s like watching Stalin and Hitler in a deathmatch; you can’t really root for either of them, you just want to shoot them both.

& Despite ALL the bitching from the overdramatic fans (Death threats? seriously? fuck.) Superior Spider-man is actually a decent title. But who cares about a positive opinion of the book when you can take the opinion of a guy who says “This book supports murder & identity thief” as the general reception?

“Twiight! I-I had a nightmare that this comic ended with Marvel comics giving a giant middle finger to its single most recognizable character!”

“Oh, Spike, that’s just a silly dream. Go back to sleep.”

@Mele Kalikimaka
But what will he sell to him, his love for Aunt May? (Yes, I remember THAT old ‘Ock loves May [for her inherited nuclear reactor]’ plot). And oh man… Ock-as-Pete hasn’t been having romantic thoughts about her, has he? because if so, then Ewwww!

And the best part about your idea is, they could just pull it out in a few years when, after this mess ends, they come up with yet ANOTHER way to degrade the character. (Hey, anyone remember the Clone Saga?)

That’s a hell of a fiftieth anniversary special.

“Spider-Man’s dead and replaced by his genocidal enemy! And everyone in the Marvel universe likes Doc Ock Spidey better!”

I think a more appropriate cover for this comic would’ve been a shot of Peter getting pissed on.

This is the one where a dying Doc Ock takes over Peter’s body and forces Peter’s into his, and then Peter dies, isn’t it?
