Anti-Sparity Shippers
in a Nutshell…
Wow, I could have written this exact post almost verbatim. Well said, I don’t think I could agree more.
What about people who watch an episode on youtube, decide they don’t like it, then never pay?
It looks like you missed the part where I said that people who downloaded the episodes should also buy them if at all possible.
Stealing is stealing. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s a company doing it for profit. If anything, that’s still bad because in addition to stealing the episodes that they worked on, you’re also stealing money from the company, by not directly watching it, and again, getting it illegally for free.
All I’m saying is people should think twice and know what they’re doing, first.
As someone who’s commented in this thread complaining about using someone else’s art to convey opinions they may not agree with, I can tell you that (1) I’m not a Sparity fan myself, (2) I think that anyone who’s downloaded the episodes should feel obligated to also purchase the show in some format if possible, and (3) there’s a difference between using something produced by an organization for profit and something produced by one person because they enjoyed doing so.
So just to clarify, art theft is a bigger crime than going into movie theatres and actually videotaping the whole movie? (Which even if you didn’t watch the movie illegally online, I’m sure all of you have watched at least one episode online.)
Just saying. Lel
Nah, Spike will remain just as clueless as to Rarity’s feelings, but he will eventually grow up and fall for a dragoness. At which point he will still consider Rarity a dear friend, and worry himself sick over how she’ll take it when he breaks up with her. And she’ll probably con him into paying for a trip to the spa so Aloe and Lotus can help her “get over the heartbreak.”
Exactly. Using one of JJ’s images in that way wouldn’t prevent JJ from doing anything with the image himself. JJ should have no more right to censor the DWM movement than they have to censor him, no matter how much he might dislike his images being used that way.
Also, I think that example would be protected under fair use as parody or commentary.
So, basically, yes, you do see art as just a tool. So if someone took one of John Joseco’s drawings and edited it to have a “Down With Molestia” message, your only objection would be with the message, not with the use of the artist’s work in a way the artist would obviously disagree with.
Did you ask the artist if you could use those lyrics to make your point? (Great song, BTW.)
All copyright is subject to many kinds of fair use, one of which is parody. There’s a huge difference between plagiarizing an artist’s work and fraudulently passing it off as your own, and borrowing a piece or derivative of another’s work to make a point.
A piece of art and a keyboard have one key thing in common: Once you’ve created one it can be used over and over again without any effort. Typing a dumb comment on derpiboo.ru doesn’t prevent you from typing something completely different in the future - similarly, making a bad edit of an image doesn’t prevent someone else from doing something completely different with that same image. Using them doesn’t take anything away from the original, so there’s no reason to ‘protect’ against that use.
Also, have you ever tried to build a keyboard from scratch? Trust me, the keyboard is a lot more impressive than a drawing.
Neither of which we have with this image, nor is it tagged as an edit.
What’s this? A post that’s actually relevant?
I mostly agree with you in that it’s pretty clear that it was created as something for Spike more than Rarity, and Rarity’s perspective on the crush is one of the more interesting things about it, especially considering what happened in Secret of my Excess.
The reason I like Sparity as a ship is the amount of really good fanfiction it has produced. Greenfire, Of Age, Yours Truly(the Sparity portion of it)… some of the best stories I’ve ever read have been about these two.
Also, it’s just good to see something nice happen to Spike. Poor guy is probably the most tragic figure in the whole show, so seeing him catch a break is always good.
So you’re saying art is nothing but another tool?
It was Rarity that counteracted Spike’s greed.
It was Spike that repaired the Fire Ruby out of sheer passion, instrumental in saving Rarity from Nightmare Forces.
Really, that’s why? Well, mission over accomplished there.
