Funny thing, back in the day I inadvertently saw a spoiler for a second about Canterlot wedding, something about “Cadance’s dark secret as Queen Chrysalis” and I thought she had some split personality shenanigans going on.

….no. but I think they are. The brighthouse exists in both. Opaline still wants the dragon fire. And the picture of filly sunny with argyle is broken but it was mended with tape.

he was a thing in G4, but he isn’t canonicall alive in G5. Its something they made up for the comics. They might as well bring Sombra, Chrysalis and Cozy and pretend they are all fine. Its not like anyone beside other comics will acknolwledge that. Its like reading a fanfic from the same creator.

Comics were never canon. Tell Your Tale and Make Your Mark acknowledge eachother. Comics just make up fanfics based on the story in those animated shows. The IDW is going bankrupt so there won’t be many comics for MLP anyway and we won’t have to worry about the contradicting anything.

Obviously wacky characters can’t be villains. It’s not like masked Obito or the Joker were a threat at all…

Yeah both s3 and s9 Sombra were terrible and the IDW Sombra, the one who had an actual backstory and redeemed himself, was much better. Fans will always find something to get mad about. Every time something changes, fans will hate it. Twilight became an alicorn? MLP sucks now. Starlight Glimmer reformed? MLP sucks now. Opaline’s daily life is revealed? MLP sucks now. I could go on but you get the point.

Don’t tell me, I remember a time when people were going mad because of new Sombra, and how childish he was, and how everyone liked the old cool intimidating one more. When in reality back in the days people were going mad because of how edgy and dark Sombra was. Some people are just never satisfied.
P.S - between s3 and s9 Sombra, I actually prefer neither. I like the IDW, the “run through stairs laughing like a kid” and “I like when others read to me” one.

I think there’s a difference between adding more dimension to a character and going against how they were set up previously.

ahahahahaha that’s it, that’s it exactly– this place has always been full of people who want every character to fit into one neat little trivia-friendly box and get Mad In Real Life if the writers ever step out of it; that was the mentality behind all the channers who soiled themselves at Rainboom velocity back in the day any time Rainbow Dash had an episode where she screwed up a lot or had to Learn A Lesson like everypony else in the show.

Oh no, they turned her into a character!

They’re using TYT’s lighter tone to show the other side of the cycle of abuse. Opaline is easing off in order to gaslight Misty (and the audience) into thinking that things aren’t that bad.

G5 is playing the long game.

I’m not sure about an OFFICIAL source, but the fact that the Crystal Brighthouse and Mane Melody were introduced solely in Tell Your Tale gave the impression that the shows were connected.

They might be drifting away from that though, as there’s been newer episodes in Tell Your Tale that have contradicted or have been contradicted by Make Your Mark.
