Description

For buck’s sake, “canon” does not mean “part of the franchise which you, personally, like and agree with and want to include”, and calling something which is part of the franchise “non-canon” because you don’t like it and want to exclude and delegitimize it just makes you sound like you don’t understand the English language. Alternate realities which are part of the same franchise are still part of the same franchise, even if you don’t like them.

No, there are people who legitimately get mad when you bring up EqG in discussion and will immediately flood you with replies telling you to fuck off with your “hideous non canon doug abominations” and such

Of course it’s canon since: equestria girls 1: between season 3 & 4. rainbow rocks: between season 4 & 5. friendship games: during season 5 finale. legend of everfree: few days or a week after friendship games? Equestria Girls Specials & Legend of Everfree During Season 6 due to starlight being twilight’s student at the time.

Hence why I tend to post “Define ‘canon’” under pics that just make a flat statement of something being canon/non-canon.

Or the pointless verbing of “gift”, or the existence of “ginormous”, or mispronouncing “mischievous” as “mischevious”, or… Sorry, my inner Grammar Nazi peeked through for a moment there.

OP surely doesn’t understand how language development works. There isn’t that much of difference between representative or fundamental set of works and the set of works that I think are fundamental or just more important than others in whatever way. Not to mention it’s almost self-mocking by highlighting manipulative nature of such statement (oh hey, let me pretend it’s not just my opinion but widely established one)—no wonder it caught on. Go fight with figurative use of the word literally if you feel like being linguistic purist today.

But Canon has many definitions and actually can be used to exclude and legitimize things you don’t like. It’s pretty much a word open for interpretation.

For example, one of Oxford’s definitions:“The list of works considered to be permanently established as being of the highest quality”
