Why cant they both be canon. the way I see it is Dragons can grow two (maybe more) ways, greed growth spurt and non-greed growth, I dont see how just because it was magically induced means it cant be the natural non-greed growth. There are age spells ,Magic dual , and both the young form of Snails and the old form of Snips didnt look different from the natural growth progression of ponies even though magic was used to do so.
 
Before you say “But Trixie had the Alicorn Amulet” , Twilights magic was amped by the Rainboom and she was as far as we know the most powerful Unicorn (now Alicorn) so she could do anything the Amulet Could let Trixie do and better.

I’ll be honest, I like his later design better. Fits better with his sarcastic persona.
