Well, I would have liked to see a whole episode of Twilight experience another challenge before Celestia would appear. What I have in mind though is just shamelessly ripped off from a video game I love.

I feel if this was a 2 parter part 2 would have just have been explaining things

We did see what happened. Celestia told Twilight “Made new magicks, get wings”. Even though there was not a shread of a hint as to what new magic she was talking about.
 
Also, it always felt wrong to me that Twilight’s ascension is something that she essentially went through on her own when her path towards it started with the bonds of her and her friends. Twilight’s Kingdom feels like a more complete ending for Twilight since the Rainbow Power was something she experienced with her friends and it showed how much they all grew together. Twilight’s ascension has her too detached from her friends as their part in it is regulated to just being a problem to solve.

If the episode was a two parter, showing what happened to Twilight after finishing Starswirl’s spell, then this episode wouldn’t get a bad rep. But god the ending with Celestia’s Ballad and Twilight’s ascension makes it up for me.

People don’t like this epsiode, not because it made Twilight an Alicorn, but because it is a broken mess of a narrative that tries to hide that fact behind emotional manipulation through it being a musical. The fact that the episode nails the spectacle aspect is the only reason I don’t give it a 1/10.
 
I do agree though that the Season 4 finale was the best ending the show could have had.

8/10. This or season 4 is where MLP:FiM should have ended.
