(FiM) Rainbow Dash’s expression looked familiar to me, as if I knew a character or image with a similar expression, and then I finally remembered what it reminded me of! The sinister evil grin that Ennard makes in Goldbox’s FNaF animations/shorts xD
I actually kinda liked the style. I hate that it was obviously done as part of a fad, and not as a real attempt at doing something nice. But I like it. many people didn’t though, Or like me they didn’t like why it was being done, before the show even aired. And all of that criticism is 100% valid. It’s really not cool that people are saying you can’t call out the art style in something when all you’ve seen is the art… That- that’s all you need to see to judge the art though. It’s not like people were judging the plot poorly based on the art. Then the show aired, and people watched it then criticised the plots. That was all entirely valid too. I wish people got that more, and realised that this is all very fine to do. It’s not rude, it’s not mean, it’s not “being a hater”, it’s finding a show with an even younger target demographic, and ENTIRELY different staff, in a non-canon world, to not be their thing. And that’s okay, that’s allowed. This show is nothing like FiM. It shouldn’t be an automatic favourite.
Also comparisons to EQG are not a smart idea. EQG’s first movie was called the worst thing connected to this franchise since Newborn Cuties. And that has continued to be true. The movie didn’t get more accepted, or somehow better. People just enjoyed what came after. It’s not us who changed, it’s the content. EQG is still terrible and I feel embarassed when my friends watch it for the first time, knowing I like EQG. I know they’re gonna wonder what’s wrong with me. I hate the film too! But I love EQG for what it became. That’s why you can’t make this comparison. Ponylife never redeemed itself. It didn’t have just a bad start. It was bad from start to finish. I guess if a season 2 comes out, that might change things. But I think EQG is more proof that peoples criticisms are valid. Everyone who hated on it was vindicated in the end. Besides if everything Hasbro made was actually perfect gold quality, then why do we have such a massive reviewer community? People criticising and picking apart episodes has always been a big part of this fandom. Ponylife deserves the same treatment that we gave Mare Do Well.
My problem with PL is that they simplified everything so no more super detailed backgrounds or iconic locations. Doesn’t make it awful, but it definitely feels inferior to FIM. I like the chibi artstyle and the stallions actually look kinda cute in it.
I would have loved to see how far the whole “Pony world Magic Leaking into the real world” would go. Maybe Have Sunset question where she truly was more happy at: Her old Pony home or her new Human home, And Like you said seeing how certain characters are similar or different from there Pony counterparts. Or how Humans would act in the pony world and vice-versa.
Frankly I would love to see these Ideas explored more, and from what I’ve seen the crew had plans for that, But alas…Hasbro had to halt it b4 it could go anywhere
Honestly I’m mixed on Pony Life. I feel like the animation looks like Funko pop (not going for the TTG comparison as that’s cliche as yay) but some of the episodes are pretty good and the season 1 finale kind of reminded me of the Equestria Games arc and Buckball Season which have two of my all time favourite episodes of S6 and 4 in it.
I feel like at the same time they could have had a 10th seaaon of FiM just to show some less appreciated characters, or maybe given Cozy another chance, since her being given the same punishment as Tirek and Chrysalis seemed disproportionate. Also there’s no actual antagonist in Pony Life. I feel that’s another point against it. A lot of the really fun epsiodes of FiM were the ones where the M6 would take on a villain. With Pony life they seem less like villains and more like generic jerks. I was happy to see Discord and Spike return but not being voiced by their original voice actors was definitely hurting the show.
And why weren’t the stop motion shorts made into actual episodes?
tl;dr Not as bad as people say, but definitely inferior to FiM.
@Woodcut
I admit I think the TTG comparisons are kinda unfair, because having seen several full episodes of TTG, (my neices & nephews like it) I don’t think they’re exactly alike. Their humor styles are different, their episode structure is different, and TTG is TVPG, and a bit more edgy, and sitcom-ish, while P.L. is more cartoonish. and MLP-ish.
Only similar thing is maybe the “thick outline” art style, but even that’s differently drawn, and frankly TTG didn’t even invent that style. Heck, TTG “ponies” don’t even look like P.L. ones if you compare them.
It’s also ignorant to call it “CalArts” (a term invented by that pervert John K. to bash Disney) especially, because TTG & such shows weren’t invented by CalArts grad’s, yet ironically Lauren Faust the one whom created “Friendship is Magic” IS from CalArts, so if you hate “CalArts,” then you have to hate her, her art, and FIM/G4, instead of TTG or P.L.
Also, many great shows with that style do exist, like Dexter’s Laboratory, Two Stupid Dogs, PPG, and many classic CN & Nicktoon shows.
@Beau Skunky
I personally don’t like the way they express their opinion, by comparing PL to TTG, for example.
I don’t know how much someone has to like TT to hate an alternate version of that show. It kinda saddens me, not only because I have no idea what has been “ruined” for them, since I’m familiar with TTG, but not TT, but also because it’s really hard to tell if their hate is real or it’s just a prank.
So, I’d say I think that I would not pay attention to that only if it wouldn’t look so confusing, if not even somehow offensive.
@Woodcut
Eh, people have a right to not like things, as long as they aren’t nasty about it.
P.L. is kinda hit or miss for me, not great, but not bad. I like the memes we’re getting out of it though.
@MrtheamazingDude
Eh, I kinda disagree. After “Camp Everfree” EqGirls started losing it’s appeal to me, and it feels like it focuses too much on Sunset Shimmer, and Glasses Twilight, (heck, it feels like Sunset Shimmer is basically the only reason to watch it, but even she got kinda dull/generic to me, and her character development arc basically finished years ago in “Rainbow Rocks”) and the other characters are just BG characters usually, and I would’ve liked to find out more about the rest of the HuManes, and see how they differ, or are similar to their pony counterparts. (Probably why I prefered the shorts.) The one time one of the others, (Rarity) got the episode spotlight, her episode was completely dull, and they retconned the personalities of some characters, especially Sour Sweet. (Losing all her humorous aspects, and becoming a generic boring girl character. So it even feels like the show is losing it’s “edge,” and sense of humor.)
It doesn’t seem to do anything much different then MLP:FIM, besides being basically “FIM but they’re in Highschool.”
There’s not much potential, besides “High school drama/issues, with occasional fantasy magic thrown in,” and such.
So honestly, EqG was nice at first, but just kinda got old for me, no offense.
At this point, I think I actually prefer P.L. over EqG.
Pretty sure a lot of it had to do with the main doll line reboot bombing….even though the Minis were still selling fairly well(I’m still salty we never got Minis of the Shadowbolts or the rest of the Dazzlings)
@MrtheamazingDude
It’d be a bit ironic, because EqG used to get as much hate (possibly more) then P.L. did when it first came out. (And before.)
In fact, some brony fan-circles still hate it passionately.

I’m pretty sure G5 will have its own separate fanbase too.
Not going to. You are right.

Change my mind.
Trust nopony, not even yourself.
@Dex Stewart
No, instead the tables have turned.
@MrtheamazingDude
I guess there could be a li’l potential at least.
Rainbow Dash always dresses in style…in hell!
“There’s not much potential”
That I have to disagree with.

I don’t see why they do have to compare PL to anything at the first place.
It’s not funny, it’s just toxic.
I guess the term “CalArts style” should be renamed, if that’s not what it represents.
I think I myself never hate the art style, even though I think that I may disapprove of the certain show or its character’s appearance.

You can talk about things you hate, but I’d be much better if you were more specific.
Hate isn’t always taken literally, thus it can’t be taken seriously…

Hmm, maybe. But Are PL Figures even selling well?
Was it? I’ve haven’t read anything that said that.
Plus, since it’s MLP and Hasbro has money out the ass, I don’t think it’s the case (but I could be wrong)
Either way though, kinda seems like a “screwed by the network” deal.
Wasn’t that due in part to financial troubles? PL looks cheaper than usual for a reason.
Edited
True, but EqG has shown to have great ideas and great potential…and then Hasbro killed it off even tho the writers had tons of plans…
Let’s just say I’m a bit salty they choice PL as the spin off show instead.
It’d be a bit ironic, because EqG used to get as much hate (possibly more) then P.L. did when it first came out. (And before.)

Sweetie Belle likes Rainbow Dash Tyrannosaurus.
Dash isn’t always proud of her past incarnations.
