The comic that shows Sunset’s origins contradicts Amending Fences, so it may be canon. However, I think the 20/20 special is canon! It’s one of the few comics you can just handwave any contradiction… Mainly because some stuff in The Cutie Mark Chronicles was eventually contradicted by other episodes.

Yeah but decades passed in Equestria since then* but only a few years passed in the world of Equestria Girls. This implies that time flows slower then Equestria in that world. So Twilight would have caught up with Sunset since Sunset would be aging slower.
 
  • If we continue using the comics for this, the first episode takes place 20 years after Twilight got her Cutie Mark (there was a recent special on this).

Hey, if anyone deserves it at this point, it’s Sunset. The fact that it would lighten the workload because a certain pair of princesses thought unloading a big two pony job onto a single pony was a cool idea would just be a bonus.

My headcanon is that Sunset Shimmer also became an Alicorn Princess like Twilight Sparkle but decided to stay in the Human World as the Principal of Canterlot High School. As long as the Crystal Mirror is still working, Sunset and Twilight could still write and visit each other when they are not busy with their duties and responsibilities.
