Upon hitting puberty, Spike did grow closer to Rarity, and in fact protected her. (He literally flew to do so).
Rarity felt jealousy over him and Gabby spending time together and did EVERYTHING in her power to get him back.
He forgave her.
He still spent more time with her during the rest of the season than with Gabby.
They stay in touch by the end of the series.
Evidence against:
An episode about Rarity growing jealous and realizing Spike deserves better.
No dude, Spike still likes Rarity.
Wow a hand touch. But Gabby and Spike sharing a sundae and Gabby feeding him a cherry? Nah that’s nothing compared to a hand touch. Never mind I could give you countless pictures of Rarity treating Spike like trash.
Your gallery has everything to do with it. It straight up exposes you for a Sparity shipper.
It’d be like me saying. “Fluttershy is the best pony and I don’t even have a favorite!” and then you pointing out how my profile thumbnail and most of my gallery is Fluttershy. It’s not off topic, I’ve caught you red handed and you’re trying and failing to convince me otherwise.
Don’t deny it, just own it and admit you’ve got a huge bias. Come on, do better…

well said, people are just delusional if they still buy Spike and Rarity
I agreed, nobody in the episode saying that Spike was over his crush on Rarity, his crush was not even mentioned at all.

I am not buying that. Spike just isn’t the type of guy who wakes up one day and says “Hmm, it sucks that Rarity treats me like she does, so I don’t know, maybe I will change” Something MAJOR should have happened for that. And because we didn’t see it, I assume that Spike just extended his circle of possible romantic interests but didn’t move on from Rarity. Gabby and Rarity are on equal positions here. Rarity acted awful sometimes. But thanks to Gabby, she was able to understand that. Now, she is nice to Spike and wants to spend time with things that make him happy too. She has her flaws but Gabby has too. So for now it is anybody’s interpretation.

Because everyone has a breaking point. You could ask the same of an abused wife who finally has enough of being beaten by her husband for years and finally turns him into the cops. “Why would you turn him in now if you didn’t give up on him for the several years he was beating you?” See how bad that logic is?
Spike got tired of Rarity using him and moved onto Gabby. Sure they’re still friends, but Spike grew up and moved on and honestly, I’m proud he finally did.
No, Gabby is an alternative for all those who don’t like Sparity. Spike has two girls as a choice and you can interpet it as you wish. But if Spike didn’t give up on Rarity for 8 and a half seasons, why should he now ?
