There is a very big difference between trying to catch something that’s falling vertically and something on a horizontal ballistic trajectory.

You can catch apples falling from the trees, but you CAN’T catch a single flying shard?!

No, I’m not counting spike’s diet, dragons could have just evolved or existed like that. I’m saying there are no episodes to the contrary. And, since generation 4 is ending then there will be no recourse. Combined with the fact that these episodes exist I think it makes sense that this is cannon by being in the show. So, the whole writer messed up can’t fix it, sense there was nothing to contradict. At least that is what I’m trying to say.

Which episodes are these? The only episode I can think of that shows gems as brittle was the one you posted the image from…. unless you want to retroactively claim that anytime that Spike eats gems now counts too or something.

That makes sense too, although I’ve never seen any case where the gems are actually as hard as they should be. It seems like all gems are this tough in equestria. And, there are multiple episodes with the same depiction of the gems, are they from the same writer? I don’t know and it may be too late to change it as the show is technically cannon.

Or that writer just messed up. Like the writer of this episode who had Rarity ask Spike to pass her the pincushion and to be careful because she doesn’t want to prick him with the pins.

Sounds like it could be related to Thaumcraft 5 where any excess primary vis in the air goes into these cool looking crystals underground, which lead to an overabundance where entire ravines were covered in crystals (before Asenor patched it). This would also explain why they are magical I suppose, an interesting theory I fear we will not now whether it is true or false.
 
In any case, these crystals (whatever they are) are rather fragile. And, I hope you have a nice day unlike them.

Well, the fact that they are so common, and that Rock Farms exist, says that they can be produced artificially… Perhaps these gems aren’t actually minerals, but rather some form of living organism, or perhaps the’re what happens to all that magic after a spell or ability is used, earth ponies and pegasi could be radiating magic and creating gems.

I love how symbolic this is. Rarity is often represented by diamonds and this cracking diamond may be Rarity herself when Spike is not around.
