@Phoenixflambe
Apparently, it’s just because, despite not being explicitly stated, the writers were straightforward on Twitter about them being a couple, and some people decided to blow that up by making noise for the sake of clicks, and it worked a little TOO well - it would seem - since apparently just about every homophobe out there with too much time on their hands decided to crawl out of their holes of misery to make further noise about this.
@The Smiling Pony
Basically, progression takes time. Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s normalized. And making a big deal about seeing a gay couple in a show doesn’t tend to help it. Homophones aren’t going away just becauee it was legalized 4 years ago
@Minus
It made people that were confident the world had moved forward aware that there are still virulent homophobes out there, including in the grand United State of America, land of the Free, as well as in our very own My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fandom.
Progress requires knowledge that progress still needs to be made.
@IceKitsune
Now I will say that without the tweet it Might not have been that obvious. I think it was the tweet that said they weren’t related, and I think people could have been arguing that they were sister-in-laws or cousins or related in some way.
Not saying they should have made it more obvious inshow, but I’m saying it might not have been That obvious if it wasn’t confirmed.
@Minus
How did we not get a gay couple in a positive light here? They take care of Scootaloo far, far more then her actual parents do. Even without the tweets anyone paying any amount of attention could tell they were a couple. Think about it this way if they weren’t both female would you have thought they were a couple? I think you would be rather crazy not to. You are also assuming that they will not come back at all in the second half of the season or the special.
Just because they don’t explicitly show them kissing or doing something romantic on screen doesn’t make them not an actual couple. There is more that can be done to show that without being explicit about it. I really hate how there is this litmus test with gay couples that they have to do something romantic on screen to be valid and if they don’t its some kind of copout and the people writing it really secretly don’t care about LGBTQ community and are just using us. Its so stupidly cynical.
@Minus
It sturred up people on both sides. Both homophobes and pro-lgbt made (some are still) a big deal about it even though it wasn’t the main focus of the episode it wasn’t even a secondary or less focus.
Also, I’m not talking about canon/in show relationships, I’m talking about fans thinking a character ship is confirmed just because a couple of characters do something a little touchie. It’s like this with many other fandoms also. I don’t give a shit if that’s how “shipping on the internet” works, it’s still kinda dumb and that shit happens irl too
@The Smiling Pony
“The real world sucks and progress doesn’t happen at a comfortable speed; learn to accept that instead of bitching about the attempts to inch forward.”
Your argument doesn’t work when no progress is being made. This episode did nothing for gay representation. It just stirred up homophobes. We didn’t get a gay couple shown in a positive light. We got the JK Rowling treatment. We are fully justified in bitching about this.
@Kane
“It’s pretty sad that 2 characters can’t be good/close friends without people thinking they’re dating or romantically involved.”
You’re such an obvious homophobe. This show is full of relentless friendship. Twilight and Starlight have a good friendship, all that talk about trust and forgiveness and depending on each other. It’s been really nice. No-one is calling them a gay couple. All the mane 6 have been very friendly together and been through so much. Again, no gay… in the main series.
Vinyl and Octavia. Not gay. And they’re in the right position as a 2-mare duo that lives together.
Don’t you find it intresting that it’s only VERY specific ponies that people say are in a relationship? You must have missed it, but these are the ones they actually wrote to be gay characters. These characters are gay, and going out with each other. That’s why we think they’re gay. Lyra and BonBon are gay.
And the sad thing is, if not for the tweet, I’d be arguing against people that called Scootaloo’s aunts gay. Because they were not written to be gay. They show nothing to indicate they’re a couple at all. If people don’t know they’re gay, then it’s not representation, and it’s not progress to a less bigoted world. It’s a cop out.
@Background Pony #E51A
“The Aunts were ambiguous”
Honestly that’s probably the best way to do it.
They’re not drawing attention to it at all, and their lesbian thing is more of a did you know sort of thing. All the show doing is showing they exist.
Cute episode. And we were definitely overdue for a canon same sex couple. I’m especially pleased by the fact that they pulled it off exactly how I always thought they should.
Someone wasn’t paying attention to Equestria Girl’s AJ and Rarity. XD
Actually I don’t think you were. The director for the EQG series admitted they pushed the shipping angle for AJ and Rarity a bit, but left their actual relationship open to however the fans wanted to see it. This, on the other hand, is a writer and producer for the show saying that yes, it is absolutely canon that they are a lesbian couple. There is a substantial difference between the two situations.
@Choo
The problem I have with Lyra and BonBon is they can just be close/touchie friends, those kinda friends exist.
It’s pretty sad that 2 characters can’t be good/close friends without people thinking they’re dating or romantically involved. Just because two characters are a little touchie, does not mean they are in a romantic relationship. It’s like this irl too, it’s impossible for two people to be close friends these days without people thinking they are dating or something.
Remember people, just because they are good friends, doesn’t mean they’d make a good couple
This is they way I am seeing it, they are not lesbian characters, they are characters that happen to be lesbian. Hell, they might not even be Lesbian, they can be Bi for all we know
So they used the same excuse Hey Arnold used about why Scootaloo’s parent’s are never around. No one acknowledged that Scoot’s parents completely neglected her for so much of her life that they never knew about the CMCs. They don’t even write to her much if they know so little about her.
Her aunts live in another town and have to take a train to visit, despite the fact that her parents have been out of the picture for years. The aunts moving to Ponyville thing should have happened at the start of the series, not the end. They show up and then take off for a week while getting a series of other ponies to look after Scootaloo. Is this how Scoots has been raised her entire life? By a series of babysitters?
No matter how you look at it, whoever has been raising Scootaloo has done a terrible job. When she risks her life doing a dangerous stunt with Lightening Dust, only Rainbow Dash cares enough to try to stop her. The aunts and parents are out of the picture, they are not even in the crowd watching. The aunts aren’t in the crowd during showstoppers, they aren’t there during the cart race, and they aren’t there when the CMC go to the crystal empire with their baton twirling. Rainbow dash is the only character who has consistently been around for any major event in Scootaloo’s life.
If Scoot’s parents or her aunts had been criticized at all for their neglect or absence, I could have liked this episode. Any push back at all would have justified this episode at the end of the series. Instead we got two absent aunts that save the day at the end who were created to get free media attention from Buzzfeed as the show ends. Either commit to having a cannon gay couple like Arthur did with Mr. Ratburn or don’t do it at all. We can tell the cakes were a couple despite never seeing them kiss on screen or see their wedding. The Aunts were ambiguous, only twitter posts confirm them to be gay. They just want the media attention.
I have no problem with gay or lesbian couples
What else is new?

And that’s where we are now.
Then what’s with all the homophobic drama in the first place? If it’s not explicitly stated then it should be fine.
It’s not explicitly stated.

It’s just a copy of a copy of a copy.
I’ll need a barcode scanner to read that.
It was heavily implied with Lyra and Bon Bon in later seasons but I don’t think there were any directly LGBT couples
Internet was a mistake.
