It’s not anymore. It never really applied in canon. But that doesn’t stop most shippers.
I kind of read “herself” as Ocellus turning into a male Smolder for some odd reason.

but Yah, if the show is going to introduce anymore shipping inside the show, they have the remainder of season 9 and any upcoming shorts or movies to do it.
Canonical hookups within the Student Six is not something I intentionally expect in the show for reals, but since they’re not the Mane Six, their characterizations have no definitive rules, so it’d not be very shocking if they do do it.

If a boy shape-shifts into a girl, or a girl shape-shifts into a boy, should you be like “oh hey your a girl now it’s totally cool now!”… Actually being on derpibooru I just realized how many people wouldn’t have a problem with it….
But I guess for the context up above first we need to find out what exactly, if anything, Smolder is into before we bring shape shifters into the mix.
