Smolder had an award-winning story about Dragon Lord Scales; the Dragons canonically do not care.

My headcanon is that she’s the first female Dragon Lord ever, or the first one on a very long time. So they didn’t have a seperate name for when there’s a Female Dragon Lord.

One thing with that. According to the map the dragon lands aren’t on the continent. They’re across the sea just like Griffonstone. There are dragons in Equestria, however, and they participate in a regular migration back to their homeland. When the dragon lord was addressing them as “dragons of Equestria” that could mean one of several different things. One possibility is that he simply meant what he said literally. The dragons from Equestria, differentiating them from the dragons who come from other lands or never left the dragon lands.

Actually, let’s be real here, Cadance is the one that should be Empress. You are an Empress if you rule an EMPire. Same suffix, see? Which, by the by, notice how the Dragon Lord, Ember’s father, in the episode says “Dragons of EQUESTRIA” not of the world, of Equestria. Also worth noting, Cadance is still a princess of Equestria. Conclusion? Equestria is the whole continent they’re on, the dragon lands and the Crystal “Empire” are actually extensions of the land of Equestria, of which Celestia and Luna rule all of. Cadance and Ember, possibly along with Thorax now that Chrysalis is dethroned and he seems to be cool with the natives, are essentially rulers of “states” under the greater Equestrian authority. Like how Ponyville has a mayor despite a local princess and a national one. They handle the day to day, but any major changes has to be taken to Canterlot, making their titles superficial at best.

First thing that came to mind was a panel from the Archie TMNT comic that briefly mentioned there’s no feminine version of the word “warlord.”

There’s at least one woman in Britain’s House Of Lords, and Her Royal Whatsernuts Elizabeth The 2 is also Lord Of Mann. It’s time to join the Century of the Anchovy and acknowledge that “lord” isn’t gender-specific.

You and the other two (potentially fictional)female dragons we’ve seen have all been referred to as Dragon Lord. It would seem the title is considered unisex, like female officers in the Navy still being referred to as Mister.
